It took a little while for the MLS to root in the United States, but over the course of the last decade or so, the sport has truly blossomed into arguably the "fourth major sport" behind football, basketball and baseball. The demand for an MLS team continues to grow, and with said demand comes the reality that the top flight of American soccer is set to become the biggest league at any level in the world.
Atlanta United
One of the two newest teams in the MLS, Atlanta United promises to bring a high-flying and high-scoring edition of soccer to the newest stadium in Atlanta, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Chicago Fire
The Fire have gone "all-in" for the 2017 season by bringing in Bastian Schweinsteiger. If the plan works, it'll be the first time that this original MLS team will have been relevant since reaching the conference finals in 2009.
Colorado Rapids
Tim Howard is back in the United States with the Rapids, but his presence alone isn't going to make up for what is surely a team that will struggle offensively most nights.
Columbus Crew
It feels like a long time ago that the Crew were hosting the MLS Cup; it was only two seasons ago. That said, this team remains one of the more dangerous in the MLS due to its insane home field advantage at MAPFRE Stadium.
D.C. United
United hasn't really been a relevant team in a while in the MLS, and that's not good for business. That said, the team has gone to a youth movement that won't pay off in 2017 but could give D.C. a relevant team again soon.
FC Dallas
We've seen consistently good regular season results out of FC Dallas in recent years, but the Hoops have had a major problem stringing together anything of note in the postseason.
Houston Dynamo
This edition of the Dynamo in 2017 looks to be one of the best they've put on the field in a while. That's saying something for a team that hasn't finished better than eighth in the West in the last three seasons.
LA Galaxy
The Galaxy continue to have the MLS' most recognizable team. Yet even with all of the teetering-on-retiring stars that continue to come play for this team, LA remains overrated and hasn't truly had a shot at the MLS Cup in years.
Minnesota United
The Loons are obviously deficient to challenge in the West in their first year, but Adrian Heath has been here before. He transitioned Orlando City to the MLS a couple years ago and is going to look to do a better job with Minnesota United.
Montreal Impact
Didier Drogba helped put the Impact on the map in the MLS. Yet for the team to stay playing at a high level, Montreal will have to figure out how to better build around its core players to succeed.
New England Revolution
The Revs have only reached the MLS playoffs three times in the last seven years. The 2014 run to the championship match was a good one, but that really appears to be a flash in the pan at this point after successive finishes of fifth or worse in the East.
New York City FC
NYCFC made some huge strides in Year 2 after a failure of a rookie campaign. Now, just like LA, this seems to be one of the most popular destinations for players who were superstars in Europe when they're looking for a place to come play before retirement.
New York Red Bulls
With great success in the regular season comes high expectations in the playoffs. RBNY has been able to build a consistent winner up through October, but once the calendar hits November, it seems like the club just perpetually falls apart.
Orlando City SC
Is the third time the charm for OCSC? The Lions opened their brand new, state of the art soccer facility in the City Beautiful this year, but the results on the field have yet to be there for Kaka and company.
Philadelphia Union
The Union aren't far removed from having one of the top teams in the East, but they've swung and missed on a lot of overpriced transfers in recent years, and that has really set the club back.
Portland Timbers
It was a magical run for the Timbers in 2015 to the MLS Cup title, but since that point, this team has really never emerged as anything more than a fringy playoff team.
Real Salt Lake
RSL has had a couple nice runs in its history, but it has never won a West Division regular season title and only has its one MLS Cup, a 2009 triumph.
San Jose Earthquakes
Aviva Stadium has largely opened with nothing but a thud for the Earthquakes. The time will come this West Coast powerhouse gets back in the saddle, but it feels like it'll be at least another year or two.
Seattle Sounders
Isn't it ironic what happened in Seattle? The team stopped being one of the more dominant clubs in the West and suddenly looked to have a penetrable home field at CenturyLink, and that's when it went on its best ever postseason run in 2016 and finally won the elusive MLS Cup.
Sporting Kansas City
SKC has all the makings of a team that is going to succeed in the regular season and fail in the playoffs. This team is full of great defenders and defensive midfielders, but in the attacking half, there are all sorts of issues.
Toronto FC
The Reds are trying to become Canada's version of LA or NYCFC. They're building around big names and are having modestly good results, but they were beaten in the MLS Cup Final last year by Seattle and figure to have a long way to go to get back to the precipice of Canada's first MLS title.
Vancouver Whitecaps
The Whitecaps are ultimately contenders for that first MLS Cup as well. They're doing so without much in the way of star power, yet they've been able to keep their homegrown talent around for what could be prolonged success.
