It has become a familiar story for the New York Red Bulls, as they make the playoffs but get bounced out shortly thereafter. The Red Bulls are coming off a 2017 season in which they finished sixth in the Eastern Conference. New York won their first round playoff game against Chicago but the Red Bulls were eliminated by Toronto FC in the Eastern Conference semifinals. New York has made the playoffs in each of the last eight years but they have not made it past the conference semifinals in any of those seasons. Will the 2018 season be any different?
New York Red Bulls MLS Odds
The Red Bulls are not one of the favorites to win the MLS Cup in 2018. They made the playoffs last season, but finishing sixth is nothing to write home about. The Red Bulls simply don’t have enough talent to compete with the upper echelon teams in the Eastern Conference.
MLS Results
The Red Bulls finished in sixth place in the Eastern Conference in 2017. They went 9-2 at home with six draws, while they were 5-10 on the road with two draws. The Red Bulls finished four points behind Columbus for fifth place, but five points ahead of seventh place New England.
Players to Watch
Bradley Wright-Phillips had a very good season for New York a year ago, as he scored 17 times in MLS play and four times in the U.S. Open Cup. He gets support from Daniel Royer who scored 12 MLS goals last season. The playmaker for New York is Sacha Kljestan who had nine assists last season.
The Coach
The Red Bulls are coached by Jesse Marsch who took over in January of 2015. The Red Bulls are 58-35 with 22 draws under Marsch.
New York Red Bulls History
The Red Bulls began play as one of the charter clubs in the MLS in 1996 but they were known as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. They were sold to Red Bull in 2006 and their name was changed to the New York Red Bulls. The team won the Supporters’ Shield in 2013 and in 2015 but they have never won the MLS Cup. They reached the final of MLS Cup in 2008 and they reached the final of the U.S. Open Cup in 2003 and 2017. The team first played at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey but in 2010 they moved into Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. The main rival for New York is D.C. United, although the New England Revolution and Philadelphia Union are also geographic rivals. The newest rival for the New York Red Bulls is New York City FC, who began play in 2015.
New York Red Bulls Predictions
The New York Red Bulls are the perennial “average” team. They do just enough to make the playoffs but they don’t have enough talent to advance very far. Last year the Red Bulls scored 53 goals, while giving up 47. There is no reason to think things will be different in 2018. The team should be right around the middle of the table in the Eastern Conference and find a way to slip into the playoffs, but once again playoff success seems unlikely.
