Atlanta was excellent at home last season, going 11-3-3, but they were just 4-6 on the road with 7 draws.

Atlanta has a number of players to watch led by Josef Martinez who scored 19 goals last season. He is complemented by Hector Villalba who had 13 goals and Yamil Asad who had 11 assists. Not to be left out is Rookie of the Year Julian Gressel who had 9 assists.

Gerardo Martino is the head coach for Atlanta United FC. He led the team to the playoffs in their inaugural season. He previously led Argentina’s national team from 2014 to 2016.
Atlanta United History Atlanta United FC began play in 2017 as an expansion franchise. They are owned by Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank. Atlanta lost their first MLS game by a score of 2-1 to the New York Red Bulls but a week later they got their first win, 6-1 over Minnesota United FC. Atlanta plays their home games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The stadium holds 83,000 fans but the capacity for soccer was set to 71,000 and set to 42,500 for all but two games. Because the stadium was not ready for the season opener, their matches for the first half of the 2017 season were played at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Atlanta was excellent on offense last season, as they scored 70 goals, second-most in the league. They were also solid on defense, as they allowed 40 goals. Atlanta does need to improve at fullback and they could use some improvement on defense in the midfield, but it is hard to argue with their numbers from last season. Atlanta has an owner willing to spend money, so if they can have some success in the transfer window there is no reason the club can’t contend for the top spot in the Eastern Conference in 2018 and challenge for the MLS Cup.
