Minnesota United FC made their MLS debut in 2017, and although they didn’t make the playoffs, they were respectable, as they finished with 36 points, good for ninth in the Western Conference. Minnesota currently plays at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, but they plan to play at Allianz Field in St. Paul, expected to open in 2019. Minnesota United FC will not be among the favorites to win the MLS Cup in 2018 but if they do well in the transfer window they could be a threat to make the playoffs.
Minnesota United FC MLS Odds
Minnesota is no threat to win the MLS Cup, so they will be listed as a big longshot in MLS future odds. Teams simply don’t win the league in their second season of existence and Minnesota is no exception. Minnesota could be improved in 2018 and that might mean playoff contention, and that would be considered a successful season for the club.
MLS Results
It was ugly early for Minnesota United FC in their inaugural season in the MLS, as after four games they had a total of one point and had been outscored by a combined 12 goals. Many people thought the team was the worst expansion club of all-time, but something changed. The team acquired Sam Cronin in March and things started to turn around. The team made a number of good moves including bringing in former New England Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. From April 1st until the end of the season, the Loons averaged 1.2 points per game.
Minnesota heads into the 2018 with a clear goal and that is to make the playoffs."People think it's easy to make the playoffs," Head coach Adrian Heath said to ESPN, "It took Toronto eight years to get there, and they had three DPs all the way through this. They've spent a lot of money. It's more difficult than people think. We've come a long way, but we've still got a long way to go. I'm never satisfied until we will be competitive at the top end of the league. We get compared with Atlanta because we joined the league at the same time. Totally different project. We've got to work really hard. Our recruiting has to be better this time around."
Players to Watch
Minnesota has a top scorer in Christian Ramirez who scored 14 goals last season. They also have a top playmaker in Kevin Molino and a difference maker in goal in Bobby Shuttleworth.
The Coach
Adrian Heath took over as the coach of Minnesota United in November of 2016 and led the team to a ninth place finish in their inaugural season.
Minnesota United FC History
Minnesota United FC became the 23rd club in MLS history in March of 2015. The ownership group of Minnesota United FC includes other Minnesota sports owners, Twins owner Jim Pohlad, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, and Glen Nelson from the Wild. Minnesota FC played their first match on March 3, 2017 against Portland and lost 5-1. They played their first home game a week later and lost 6-1 to Atlanta United FC. The team won their first game in April, as they defeated Real Salt Lake 4-2.
Minnesota United FC Predictions
Minnesota is not a contender to win the MLS Cup but they may threaten for a playoff spot in the Western Conference in 2018. The team still needs to improve defensively, so whether or not they make the playoffs could be determined by how they do in the transfer market.
