It was a disappointing finish for Seattle Sounders FC in 2017, as they lost the MLS Cup final to Toronto FC by a score of 2-0. The Sounders won the MLS Cup in 2016 and they won the Supporters’ Shield in 2014. They won the U.S. Open Cup in 2009, 2010, 2011 and in 2014. Seattle began play as Seattle Sounders FC in 2009 as the league’s 15th team. They played their first home match on March 19, 2009 and defeated the New York Red Bulls by a score of 3-0. Seattle became the first MLS expansion club to win their first three matches. They became the second MLS expansion team to win the U.S. Open cup in 2009. Seattle won the MLS Cup in 2016 as they defeated Toronto FC in a penalty shootout.
Seattle plays their home games at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington, home of the Seattle Seahawks. The Sounders have rivalries with Portland and Vancouver in the Cascadia Cup. The team also has a budding rivalry with Toronto FC, as the teams have met in the MLS Cup final in each of the last two seasons.
