What happened to the LA Galaxy last season? They finished with their worst record in team history at 8-18 with 8 draws. They missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008, as very few of their younger players came through. The Galaxy had huge turnover before last season, as long time coach Bruce Arena left along with veterans Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane, Mike Magee and Alan Gordon. While it was thought that the Galaxy might struggle in 2017, their fall was dramatic. Can the Galaxy bounce back in 2018 and be competitive?
LA Galaxy MLS Odds
The Galaxy are not a contender to win the MLS Cup in 2018, as teams simply don’t go from last to first very often in sports, and Los Angeles doesn’t have the talent to make a huge leap. The team might be able to get into playoff contention if they make some good transfer moves but they are not one of the league’s top teams.
MLS Results
Los Angeles was plain and simple a disaster last season. They finished with their fewest wins, fewest points per game and they finished last overall in the MLS. Los Angeles was decimated by injuries last season, as Giovani dos Santos and Gyasi Zardes started the season hurt and they were joined by Jermaine Jones, Sebastian Lletget, and Baggio Husidic. The team didn’t get quality play in goal and the defense simply fell apart. The offense was a mess for most of the season and if not for Romain Alessandrini it would have been even worse.
Players to Watch
The Galaxy has at least one player who gets the fans excited in Allesandrini. He scored 13 goals and had 12 assists last season and in just 30 games.
The Coach
Sigi Schmid took over last season at the end of July. He did bring in a better defensive system and demanded accountability, but whether he is the long term answer is still in question.
LA Galaxy History
The Galaxy are one of the charter members of the league, as they began play in 1996. They are one of the most successful teams in MLS history, as they have won the MLS Cup five times and the Supporters’ Shield four times. They have also won the U.S. Open Cup twice and they are one of just two American clubs to win the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
The Galaxy made history in 2007 when they signed English player David Beckham from Real Madrid. It was the most high profile signing in MLS history and opened the door for other International signings. The team later brought in Robbie Keane, Luis Hernandez and Steven Gerrard, among others. The Galaxy featured Landon Donovan for many years and he is the all-time leading scorer in MLS history.
The Galaxy played their first games at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, but since 2003 they have played their games at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. The top rival for the LA Galaxy is the San Jose Earthquakes and the teams play the California Clasico.
LA Galaxy Predictions
The Galaxy have a lot of work to do to get back to contender status in the MLS. Schmid seems to have the team moving in the right direction but it may take some time to get the roster he wants. LA badly needs a goaltender and they also need help at defense and upfront. Allesandrini had a big year from the midfield but the team needs a striker. The Galaxy should be improved in 2018, but contending for the MLS Cup is at least another year or more away.
