Defender DaMarcus Beasley said the team was confident in last year’s final but that nothing went right. “No one expected us to get this far but us,” said Beasley to ESPN. “It still leaves a bad taste in your mouth. We were really confident coming into this series, especially how we’ve been at home. The series was over at home – we gave up two goals, we didn’t do the little things right.”

The Dynamo have a top scorer in Erick Torres and some good supporting players in Albert Elis and Mauro Manotas. The trio combined to score 34 goals last season.

It was a good debut season for Wilmer Cabrera who took over in October of 2016. He led the team to the playoffs in his first season with the Dynamo.

The Dynamo began play in 2006 as an expansion team even though they were really the San Jose Earthquakes in another uniform and in another locale. They play their games at BBVA Compass Stadium, a soccer-specific stadium in Houston, Texas. Houston has had a lot of MLS success, winning the MLS Cup in 2006 and in 2007, their first two seasons in the league. Houston finished in second place in the Western Conference in their debut season. They also became the first American team to score a point on the road in CONCACAF Champions League play.
Houston has a big rivalry with FC Dallas and the teams play each season in the Texas Derby. Houston has also developed a rivalry with Sporting Kansas City.

The Dynamo are a tough team to predict simply because the West is full of parity. Houston was just three points out of first place in the West last season, but they were only four points from missing out on the playoffs. Houston should be better on the road in 2018, as it would be hard to be any worse, and just a little bit of road success should be enough for this team to make the playoffs and challenge for the West title in 2018.
