The Colorado Rapids will have a new look in 2018, as they are coming off a very poor 2017 season that saw them finish in 10th place in the Western Conference. Colorado is cleaning house, both on and off the field heading into next season. They will have a new manager, new GM, new assistant GM and a new director of soccer. The most likely candidate to take over as head coach is New Zealand manager Anthony Hudson. Can Colorado bounce back into playoff contention in 2018?
Colorado Rapids MLS Odds
Colorado is not a serious contender to win the MLS Cup in 2018. Rarely does a team go from next to last to first in one season. It is possible for a team to fall that far, as Colorado proved last season, as they went from the Western Conference Finals to the basement, but going back up the ladder is not as easy.
MLS Results
The fall for Colorado in 2017 was dramatic, as they went from one of the top teams in the league to one of the worst. They finished with the third-worst record in the MLS and next to last in the Western Conference. The team finished with 33 points and they had the worst road record in the league at 1-14-2. Once Colorado traded Sam Cronin, the midfield fell apart. Injuries were a factor last season, but the team used injuries as an excuse and didn’t play cohesively. Colorado fired head coach Pablo Mastroeni in the middle of the season to shake things up but it didn’t work.
Players to Watch
One of the few players to play well a year ago was Dominique Badji. He had 9 goals and 6 assists last season. He was one of the few players who were exciting to watch last year.
The Coach
The Rapids will have a new head coach in 2017, as Mastroeni is gone and interim head coach Steve Cooke will not be back.
Colorado Rapids History
Colorado is one of the founding members of the league, as they began play in 1996. The Rapids have had success, as they won the MLS Cup in 2010 in their second MLS Cup appearance. They previously lost in the MLS Cup Final in 1997. Colorado finished second in the U.S. Open Cup in 2016. Colorado played their first matches at Mile High Stadium in Denver before moving to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado in 2007. The soccer-specific stadium is located about eight miles north of downtown Denver and holds nearly 20,000 fans. The main rival for Colorado is Real Salt Lake and the teams play each season for The Rocky Mountain Cup.
Colorado Rapids Predictions
Colorado is going to look different in 2018. Interim General Manager Padraig Smith said the team could make as many as 11 roster changes heading into next season. They will have a new head coach who will need to implement his new system. Colorado still has Badji, Gashi and Aigner so they do have hope and if they make some good transfers they could get back into playoff contention but anything more than that seems unlikely in 2018.
