2017-18-Montreal-Impact-Betting-Picks-at-JustBet-Sportsbook

The Montreal Impact took a major fall in 2017, as they went from a team that made the conference final, to a team that missed the playoffs. Montreal finished in 10th place, 11 points out of sixth place. The Impact had been a major success story in the MLS, as they made the playoffs in three of their first five years of existence, including making the conference final in 2016. The Impact will have a different look in 2018, as gone is head coach Mauro Biello who had been at the helm since 2015. Montreal is still looking for a replacement for striker Didier Drogba who left the team after the 2016 season and now Montreal will need to replace midfielder Patrice Bernier.

Montreal Impact MLS Odds

Montreal is not among the serious contenders to win the MLS Cup in 2018. The Impact finished last season very poorly, losing nine of their last ten games. They still haven’t found a replacement for Drogba and now their midfield looks weaker without Bernier.  Montreal may bounce back to some extent in 2018, but unless they make some major moves they will not be an MLS Cup contender.

MLS Results

Montreal completely collapsed at the end of last season, losing 9 of their last 10 and the poor finish cost Biello his job. Montreal was just a .500 team at home, going 8-8 with one draw, outscoring opponents by a combined 30-25, while they were 3-9 with 5 draws, being outscored by a combined 33-22.

Players to Watch

Montreal was strong in the midfield, with both Ignacio Piatti and Blerim Dzemaili having solid seasons in 2017. Piatti is the star of the club but if Montreal is to improve in 2018 they need to surround Piatti with some other marquee players. Laurent Ciman played well on defense, but very few other players were noteworthy in 2017.

The Coach

The Impact will have a new head coach in 2018, as gone is Mauro Biello who was fired after the 2017 season.

Montreal Impact History

The Impact began play in the MLS in 2012 as an expansion club. They played their first MLS game against the Vancouver Whitecaps and lost 2-0. They played their first home game against the Chicago Fire at Olympic Stadium and played to a 1-1 draw. Montreal finished in seventh place in their debut season. The Impact won the Canadian Championship in 2013 and in 2014 and they made the MLS playoffs in just their second year of existence. Because they won the Canadian Championship, the Impact qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League in 2014-2015. Montreal made the final and lost to Club America.

The biggest rival for Montreal is Toronto FC, simply because Montreal and Toronto have competed against each other in many other sports including soccer. The rivalry goes back to the NASL and the Canadian Soccer League.

Montreal plays their home games at Saputo Stadium, built in 2008. The team has also played on occasion at Olympic Stadium.

Montreal Impact Predictions

Montreal simply couldn’t get enough scoring in 2017 without Didier Drogba. Of the 52 goals that the team scored in 2017, just 16 were scored by strikers. Montreal used Matteo Mancosu and Anthony Jackson-Hamel as their top strikers and neither was very successful. Jackson-Hamel is just 24 years old, so perhaps he can develop into a good option. Montreal is not an MLS Cup contender and unless they make some major additions they don’t have a look of a playoff team heading into the 2018 season.
