The San Jose Earthquakes are coming off their first playoff appearance since 2012, as they finished in sixth place in the Western Conference in 2017. Just making the playoffs was considered a success for San Jose, and that was a good thing because they were routed in the playoffs by Vancouver, losing 5-0 in the knockout round.  San Jose was a good home team a year ago, winning 10 times, but if they want to be a serious contender in the Western Conference in 2018 they have to improve last year’s 3-12-2 road mark.

San Jose Earthquakes MLS Odds

San Jose is not a contender to win the MLS Cup in 2018, but they could contend again for a playoff spot. They have a big time scorer in Chris Wondolowski but they need to find other players who can support him and they have to improve a very leaky defense that gave up 60 goals last season.

MLS Results

The Earthquakes got another good season from Wondolowski who had 13 goals, the seventh straight season he has scored double-digit goals, but the defense was very poor almost all year. Looking simply at the numbers, it is amazing San Jose made the playoffs at all, as they were outscored by a combined 60-39. The back line and the goaltending for San Jose were awful in 2017. The Earthquakes made the playoffs because they won the games they were supposed to win, especially at home. They were 10-2 at home with five draws, while they went 3-12 on the road with two draws.

Players to Watch

It is all about Wondo when it comes to San Jose. He is one of the few players worth watching and the face of the franchise.

The Coach

Chris Leitch took over as head coach for San Jose on June 25, 2017, replacing Dominic Kinnear.  He led the team to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup in 2017 and to their first MLS playoff appearance since 2012.

San Jose Earthquakes History

The Earthquakes have an interesting history, as they were one of the charter members of the MLS when it started in 1996. San Jose played in the first MLS game in history when they were known as the Clash and they defeated D.C. United 1-0. The team’s official nickname was changed from Clash to Earthquakes in 1999. The team has won two MLS Cup titles, in 2001 and in 2003. They won the Supporters’ Shield in 2005 and in 2012. The team was relocated in 2006 and actually became the Houston Dynamo, but their name, colors, logo and history were not transferred. The Earthquakes returned as a franchise in 2008. It is somewhat similar to what happened in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens.

San Jose plays most of their games at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California but they also play occasionally at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California and Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California. The big rival of San Jose is the LA Galaxy and the teams play the California Clasico every season. The Earthquakes also play the Heritage Cup against the Seattle Sounders FC.

San Jose Earthquakes Predictions

San Jose was very fortunate just to make the playoffs in 2017, as they were outscored by 21 goals on the season. They need to find some help for Wondo and they need to improve on defense and in goal. Perhaps they can do enough in the transfer window to remain a playoff contender, but it is hard to get too excited about the Earthquakes heading into 2018.
