Orlando City SC has only been a Major League Soccer team for three years, but they seem to be going in the wrong direction. The club finished seventh in the Eastern Conference in their inaugural season and then eighth in 2016. They fell to a tenth place finish in 2017 and changes are coming heading into the 2018 season. The most concerning part of last year is that the team started 6-1 and then won just four more games the rest of the season. The pressure is squarely on head coach Jason Kreis to get this team into the playoffs in 2018.
Orlando City SC MLS Odds
Orlando City SC is no threat to win the MLS Cup in 2018. The team has never made the playoffs in their three-year existence, so just making the playoffs would be a major accomplishment.
MLS Results
The 2017 season for Orlando City started great, as they went 6-1 but the rest of the season was a mess. After early May, the team simply couldn’t do anything right. And it was more than just bad luck, as they lost by three goals or more a total of six times. Winning just four times in the last 27 games is a good way to get your coach fired. Orlando City went 7-5 at home last season with 5 draws, outscoring opponents by a combined 24-19. They were 3-10 on the road with 4 draws, getting outscored by a combined margin of 39-15.
Players to Watch
Cyle Larin led Orlando City in scoring for the third straight season in 2017 but all was not rosy for Larin. He did score 12 goals but seven of those goals came in the first ten games of the season. He was arrested for DUI and he didn’t play that well the rest of the year. Orlando City has a good central defender in Jonathan Spector but far too often he gets no help.
The Coach
Jason Kreis took over in July of 2016 but he hasn’t had much success. He tried to shake things up in 2017 but most of his moves didn’t work out. The defense looked better at times for Orlando City in 2017, but Kreis was a bit stubborn, as he refused to change his system when things fell apart.
Orlando City SC History
Orlando City began play as an expansion club in 2015. They became the first MLS team located in Florida since 2001. The Lions played their first game on March 8, 2015 in front of 62,510 and played to a 1-1 draw with New York City FC. Orlando finished in 7th place in the Eastern Conference in their first season and nearly made the playoffs. Larin was named MLS Rookie of the Year, as he scored 17 goals for Orlando City that season. Orlando City plays at Orlando City Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
Orlando City SC Predictions
Orlando City is not a contender to win the MLS Cup and realistically they have a lot of work to do to simply become a playoff contender. Orlando City has only one reliable scorer and although they have a decent defense, they still don’t have enough depth behind their top players. Another season of missing the playoffs is the most likely scenario for Orlando City SC in 2018.
