The Philadelphia Union will look to bounce back and make the playoffs in 2018 after missing out in 2017. The Union have been consistently mediocre in the MLS since they came into the league in 2010. Philadelphia has finished sixth, seventh, eighth or ninth in the Eastern Conference in all but one of their seasons, making the playoffs just twice. It is hard to see anything other than another middle of the road finish for the Union in Major League Soccer in 2018.
Philadelphia Union MLS Odds
Philadelphia is not a serious contender to win the 2018 MLS Cup, as they are listed at double-digit odds. Philadelphia has never been a threat to win the title, as their best-ever finish was making the conference semifinals in 2011.
MLS Results
Philadelphia is coming off an eighth place finish in the Eastern Conference in 2017 that saw them miss the playoffs. The Union went 11-14 with 9 draws and they were outscored by a combined 61-53. Philadelphia has done very little in their existence, making the playoffs only twice. The team did finish runner-up in the 2014 and 2015 U.S. Open Cup tournaments.
Players to Watch
The best player for Philadelphia last season was C.J. Sapong who broke the franchise record for goals in a season with 16. He broke the record of 14 that was set by Sebastien Le Toux. The other two players of note for Philadelphia are goalkeeper Andre Blake who set a career high for clean sheets in a season in 2017 and midfielder Haris Medunjanin who started in all 34 games and had a team-high 12 assists to go along with two goals scored.
The Coach
Jim Curtin took over as the Philadelphia head coach in November of 2014. He spent most of his playing career with the Chicago Fire.
Philadelphia Union History
The Union began play in Major League Soccer in 2010. They play their home matches at Talen Energy Stadium, located in Chester, Pennsylvania. The team also plays occasionally at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles. The first match for Philadelphia was played in March of 2010 when they lost to Seattle by a score of 2-0. The main rivals for Philadelphia are D.C. United and the New York Red Bulls. The all-time goal scorer for Philadelphia is Sebastien Le Toux who scored 56 goals in just over five years.
Philadelphia Union Predictions
The Union are a team that doesn’t have enough overall talent to contend for a top spot in the Eastern Conference, but they have enough to challenge for a playoff spot. The team may end up losing Giliano Wijnaldum and Fabinho and it is pretty much a given that Roland Alberg is leaving, so they will need to sign replacements. If Philadelphia can get another big year from Sapong and more good play in goal from Blake they could make a run at a playoff spot in 2018, but it is hard to see much more than that for the Philadelphia Union in 2018.
