The gap between Bayern Munich and the rest of the teams in the Bundesliga is about as wide as it's ever been. A sixth straight championship seems to be a given for the Reds, but the rest of this league is almost ridiculously unpredictable.
Bayer Leverkusen
There was a point that Bayer Leverkusen was one of the top teams in Germany. Yet last year, Bayer fell apart, finishing 12th and picking up just five wins at home.
Bayern Munich
There's nothing stopping this machine. The Allianz is virtually impenetrable for visitors, and we just can't see that changing this year. The Reds have one of the top squads in the world, and merely winning the Bundesliga isn't worth much to their fans anymore.
Borussia Dortmund
BVB started to slip just a bit, and it was basically inevitable. Losing Jurgen Klopp to Liverpool was basically the last straw, at least when it comes to Dortmund being at the very tip top of the Bundesliga.
Borussia Monchengladbach
Borussia Monchengladbach is taking a couple steps backwards for sure. The team was third best in 2014-15, and it dipped out of European competition for this season after finishing ninth last year.
Eintracht Frankfurt
We're never going to see Eintracht Frankfurt sitting at the top of the Bundesliga, but if this team can continue to survive, it'll be considered an accomplishment.
FC Augsburg
Troubles on the road kept Augsburg far too close to the relegation battle last season. This club will be dying for more than 17 points in 17 away fixtures this year.
FC Cologne
FC Cologne has been all over the place in recent years. A fifth place finish in the Bundesliga was about as good as it really could get in a year where there were four dominant teams.
Hamburg SV
Phew! Hamburg managed just 10 points on the road last season and was very, very fortunate just to stay up, especially after posting the second worst goal differential in the top flight at -28.
Hannover 96
It was a big fight to get into the Bundesliga from the second division last year, but Hannover 96 got the job done and will hope for a long stay in the top flight now.
Hertha Berlin
Hertha Berlin won 12 games at home last season, just one shy of Bayern Munich. If that keeps up, this could be a team that challenges for a Champions League spot this year.
Mainz
It really feels like just a matter of time until Mainz heads back to the second division. A 15th place finish last year was a good enough result for a team which has a goal to merely avoid relegation.
RB Leipzig
The time is here for some new blood in Germany. We're not sure if RB Leipzig is really set to challenge Bayern Munich, but this team went from not existing eight seasons ago to second-best in Germany.
SC Freiburg
Freiburg topped out in third in the Bundesliga in 1994-95, and much of its history has been in the middle of the top flight table. Last year was a bit of an exception, as the team finished seventh, just good enough to enter the early stages of Europa League play.
Schalke 04
A team with the history of Schalke 04 shouldn't be struggling just to hang in the middle of the Bundesliga table. Alas, a frustrating season ended in a 10th place finish last year.
TSG Hoffenheim
Hoffenheim wasn't beaten at home last season, and it allowed just 14 goals in 17 matches at home. The team is now off to the Champions League, a huge accomplishment for sure for a club that many believe is due for a massive drop this season.
VfB Stuttgart
The nightmare that comes with playing in the second division in Germany is over for Stuttgart. The team is back in the Bundesliga after winning the second division last year.
VfL Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg was initially thought to be a team that could challenge for a Champions League spot last year. Instead, the team only finished five points clear of safety.
Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen started to play like its old self for a bit last year. The team finished eighth, three points off from a Europa League spot. That said, we'd be surprised if one of the former giants of Germany didn't get back into European play for 2018-19.
