Mainz is coming off a tough season a year ago that just barely had them avoiding relegation. The poor season cost Martin Schmidt his job, as he was sacked. Mainz played in the Europa League a year ago and the added games definitely took their toll on the players. The club was also very unlucky a year ago, as they lost a number of matches they should have won or drawn.
There is no question the team is going to miss Cordoba but they made some decent moves in the off-season. They picked up Adler who replaces Lossl in goal and they got Maxim to upgrade the midfield.
The pressure is on new coach Sandro Schwarz who was promoted from Mainz II. If Mainz and Schwarz are going to survive in 2017-2018, they need another strong season from Bell who leads the attack. They also need Latza to stay healthy.
Mainz wasn’t that great at home last season, as they finished 7-6 with 4 draws, outscoring opponents 30-26. They need to be a little stronger at home this season. They also have to be much better on the road, as last season they picked up just three road victories. They were outscored by a combined 29-14 on the road a year ago.
The bottom line with Mainz is that they are probably somewhere in between what they did two years ago and what they did last year. They don’t look good enough to finish in sixth place or realistically compete for a Europa League spot in 2017-2018 but they also don’t look like a team that is going to face relegation. The reality is that Mainz is somewhere in the middle and that should mean a finish anywhere between 11th and 13th place for the 2017-2018 season.
