Mainz suffered a big drop last season, as they went from sixth place to 15th place in the Bundesliga. The team just barely avoided humiliation, as they were only five points clear of the relegation zone. The team will have to find a way to replace striker Jhon Cordoba if they hope to improve on their 15th place finish from last season. If they are to avoid relegation this season they also need to improve their rotten 3-11-3 road mark from a year ago.

Mainz is no threat to win the Bundesliga, so the question is whether or not they can avoid relegation. It was thought that Mainz would be totally safe last season, as they were coming off a sixth place finish but the team flopped to a 15th place finish last season. The 2017-2018 season should give us an idea of whether their season two years ago was a fluke or if last season was just a blip.

What's New?

Mainz added Rene Adler, Abdou Diallo from AS Monaco, Viktor Fischer from Middlesbrough, Kenan Kodro from CA Osasuna and Alexandru Maxim from VfB Stuttgart.

The addition of Diallo looks to be a good one in the long term for Mainz."Abdou Diallo is a strong player and an intelligent fighter who has created a lot of enthusiasm on the European market.” Mainz sports director Rouven Schroder said on the club's official website.

What's Gone?

The team lost Pierre Bengtsson on loan to Copenhagen, Jhon Cordoba to Cologne, Besar Halimi on loan to Brondby, Bojan Krkic to Stoke City, Jonas Lossl on loan to Huddersfield, Todor Nedelev to Botev Plovdiv, Florian Niederlechner to Freiburg and Andre Ramalho to Bayer Leverkusen.

Mainz 2017-18 Predictions

Mainz is coming off a tough season a year ago that just barely had them avoiding relegation. The poor season cost Martin Schmidt his job, as he was sacked. Mainz played in the Europa League a year ago and the added games definitely took their toll on the players. The club was also very unlucky a year ago, as they lost a number of matches they should have won or drawn.

There is no question the team is going to miss Cordoba but they made some decent moves in the off-season. They picked up Adler who replaces Lossl in goal and they got Maxim to upgrade the midfield.

The pressure is on new coach Sandro Schwarz who was promoted from Mainz II. If Mainz and Schwarz are going to survive in 2017-2018, they need another strong season from Bell who leads the attack. They also need Latza to stay healthy.

Mainz wasn’t that great at home last season, as they finished 7-6 with 4 draws, outscoring opponents 30-26. They need to be a little stronger at home this season. They also have to be much better on the road, as last season they picked up just three road victories. They were outscored by a combined 29-14 on the road a year ago.

The bottom line with Mainz is that they are probably somewhere in between what they did two years ago and what they did last year. They don’t look good enough to finish in sixth place or realistically compete for a Europa League spot in 2017-2018 but they also don’t look like a team that is going to face relegation. The reality is that Mainz is somewhere in the middle and that should mean a finish anywhere between 11th and 13th place for the 2017-2018 season.
