It was ugly last season for Wolfsburg as they needed a playoff victory against Eintracht Braunschweig simply to avoid relegation. Wolfburg sacked manager Dieter Hecking in October and replaced him with Valerian Ismael, but he did little and the club decided to let him go and they hired Andries Jonker for this season. Jonker probably walked into a bad situation, as Wolfsburg lost Julian Draxler to Paris Saint-Germain, and Daniel Caligiuri left for Schalke. The goal this season for Wolfsburg is to avoid relegation and it won’t be easy.

Odds To Win Bundesliga: +2500 (Field)
Wolfsburg is no threat to win the Bundesliga, so the focus is on avoiding relegation. Based on what the team did in the off-season it could be a struggle this season for Wolfsburg. They were a bad team last season that just barely survived and they don’t appear to be that much better against a Bundesliga that appears stronger.

What's New?
The team added John Anthony Brooks from Hertha Berlin?, Ignacio Camacho from Malaga CF, Landry Dimata from Oostende, Kaylen Hinds from Arsenal, Marvin Stefaniak from Dynamo Dresden, William from Internacional and Felix Uduokhai from 1860 Munich. The team also made a late move and got Divock Origi on loan from Liverpool.
The addition of Brooks could be a good one, as he was an excellent defender for Hertha Berlin but he will miss the first three months of the season due to injury. What Brooks was thinking is another story, as he goes from a team in Berlin that can contend for an upper level finish to a team in Wolfsburg that could be in a relegation fight.
What's Gone?
The team lost Diego Benaglio to Monaco, Amara Conde on loan to Holstein Kiel, Orrin McKinze Gaines to Darmstadt, Luiz Gustavo to Marseille, Jannes Horn to Cologne, Borja Mayoral to Real Madrid, Ricardo Rodriguez to AC Milan and Philipp Wollscheid to Stoke City.
VfL Wolfsburg 2017-18 Predictions
Who knows what to expect with Wolfsburg. Other than Gomez they can’t score and they don’t play great defense. They have one good striker in Gomez who scored 16 of their 34 goals. When Gomez doesn’t score the team has no real chance to win. Perhaps the addition of Nany Dimata will help but he is just 19-years old and whether his talent will transfer over from the Belgian Pro League to the Bundesliga remains to be seen. Wolfsburg has Gomez but he needs help. Yunus Malli was paid a lot of money when he came over from Mainz and he needs to produce.
It was just three years ago that Wolfsburg finished second to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. They fell to 8th place two years ago and last year to 16th place. It could get even worse this season.
Wolfsburg played a lot of close matches last season, as they lost 11 matches by one goal and they won six more by one goal. They also played to seven draws.
Wolfsburg probably can’t count on another 16-goal season from Gomez so someone is going to have to step up if this team is to avoid relegation. Wolfsburg is expected to play a 4-2-3-1 formation with Gomez leading the way.
Wolfsburg has enough talent to improve upon last year’s 16th place finish but they also are one injury to Gomez away from a relegation fight. Wolfsburg does not have enough around Gomez to make a serious run at a Top 10 finish, so they goal is simply to finish in 13th or 14th place and avoid a relegation playoff.
