Last season was a definite disappointment for Borussia Monchengladbach, as they went from a top 4 finish two years ago to out of the top 7. The poor season led to the firing of Andre Schubert, as he has been replaced by Dieter Hecking. The team added Vincenzo Grifo and Matthias Ginter in the off-season so it is possible the team could make a run at a top 4 position and a Champions League spot this season. Monchengladbach will have to replace Mahmoud Dahoud but they appear to have players who can step up.

If there is any team in the field that could make a run at Bayern during the 2017-2018 season it would be Monchengladbach. It probably won’t happen, as Bayern is extremely talented but Monchengladbach was in the mix two years ago. It is a little surprising that Monchengladbach was listed as part of the field, as they are a team that could bounce back into the top 4 this season, coming off a disappointing season a year ago.

Borussia Monchengladbach 2017-18 Predictions

Monchengladbach was a major disappointment last season at 12-13-9 but they should be improved this season, but they simply have to do better than 7-5-5 at home. Lars Stindl is a good striker who had 32 goals in the last two seasons in all competitions and he should be better this season. He played well in the Confederations Cup in the summer and that should give him confidence heading into this season.

There is no doubt that playing in European competition hurt Monchengladbach in terms of the Bundesliga last season, as they simply wore out. That won’t be the case this year, as the team will be entirely focused on a top 4 finish.

Manager Hecking did a decent job after taking over last season, as the team went 8-4-5 under his leadership. The additions of Ginter and Zakaria look to be good ones but they will miss Dahoud. If Zakaria can take his place that would definitely be a plus.

Oftentimes in sports a team comes too far, too fast and falls. That is what happened to Monchengladbach last season. They should benefit in 2017-2018 from no European football and they should be improved with a full season of Hecking at the helm. They have some quality scorers in Stindl and Raffael and their midfield is good with Thorgan Hazard and Christophe Kramer.

The question is how much Monchengladbach improves this season. Bayern is still the class of the league and there is no doubt that Leipzig and Dortmund are strong but Monchengladbach can definitely play with those teams in addition to Hoffenheim. Not having to worry about European football will take some of the pressure off of Hecking and there is a good chance that Monchengladbach will make a run at a Champions League spot in 2017-2018. A third or fourth place finish seems the most likely scenario for Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017-2018.
