Hamburg SV found a way to avoid relegation last season, as they finished in 14th place even though they had a -28 goal differential. To put that in perspective, only SV Darmstadt 98 had a worse goal differential last season. Hamburg SV, or Hamburger SV if you prefer, will have to play a lot better on defense than they did last season when they allowed 61 goals if they hope to avoid a relegation fight in 2017-2018. This season will be the last one for Nicolai Muller, who has decided not to sign a contract extension.

Hamburg is no threat to win the Bundesliga in 2017-2018, so it is all about avoiding relegation. It is amazing that the team did so well last season considering they were pathetic on offense, scoring just 33 goals and rotten on defense, as they gave up 61 goals. Both numbers need to improve this season if Hamburg is to survive.

What's New?

The team brought in Andre Hahn from Gladbach, Kyriakos Papadopoulos from Bayer Leverkusen, Julian Pollersbeck from Kaiserslautern, Bjarne Thoelke from Karlsruher SC and Rick van Drongelen from Sparta Rotterdam.

The good news for Hamburg is that they were able to hold onto Bobby Wood. Hamburg investor Klaus-Michael Kuhne said keeping Wood was a big priority. He advised the club to keep Wood and said he would only finance Andre Hahn if Wood stayed. "I did not give the club any more for it, but I advised them to prolong [Wood's] contract and said I'd only finance Andre Hahn if they were to keep Wood," Kuhne said. Kuhne has been funding the club since 2010.

What's Gone?

The team lost Rene Adler to Mainz, Nabil Bahoui was released, Johan Djourou was released; Ashton Gotz went to Hamburg II and Matthias Ostrzolek to Hannover 96.

Hamburg SV 2017-18 Predictions

On paper, Hamburg should not have avoided relegation last season, so perhaps they could be improved this year. They did add Kyriakos Papadopoulos but Schalke didn’t want him, Leipzig didn’t want him and Bayer Leverkusen let him walk. Can he prove everyone wrong and have a good season?

There is no doubt that Hamburg would have liked to get another big year from Muller in what will be his last one with the club. He scored five goals and added six assists last season. The bad news for Hamburg is that Muller was hurt early in the 2017-2018, as he ruptured his ACL while celebrating a goal. Hamburg will have to find a way to win without him this season and that will not be easy.

Hamburg was simply awful on the road last season, as they went 2-11-4, so if they are going to stay up they have to get more road points. The team went 8-5 at home with 4 draws and that record was good enough to just barely get them enough points for survival.

Last season the team won a total of two games by more than two goals. Conversely, the team lost by more than two goals 11 times.  The defense simply has to improve, especially with Muller out of the lineup. The offense with Muller wasn’t that good a year ago, as they created the second-fewest chances in the league. They didn’t have anyone who averaged more than 1.7 shots per match.

The goal for Hamburg this season is simply to survive. The addition of Pollerbeck in goal is a good one and Wood continues to improve, plus Hunt is a decent scorer and Markus Gisdol is a good manager. Perhaps that will be enough to keep Hamburg from relegation in 2017-2018.
