What a drop it was for Bayer Leverkusen last season, as they went from 3rd to 12th in the Bundesliga. The defense for Leverkusen was poor and the team struggled at home. It may not be any better this season, as Javier Hernandez is gone. Leverkusen is going to need 21-year old midfielder Julian Brandt (14 goals in the last two seasons) to take another step forward and they need transfer help. Leverkusen didn’t do a great deal in the off-season to replace some of the talent they lost, so challenging for a Europa League spot might be out of reach for the team in 2017-2018.

Bayer Leverkusen 2017-18 Predictions
It was a tough season a year ago for Leverkusen as they finished with just 41 points, the worst finish for the team in 14 years. They scored 53 goals and allowed 55. They played in the Champions League and made it to the Round of 16 before losing to Atletico Madrid. They played very poorly in the DFB Pokal, losing in the 2nd round.
Leverkusen has to replace Chicharito who scored 11 goals in the Bundesliga last season. They also have to replace Toprak and Calhanoglu. The good news is that Leverkusen has Kai Havertz, who they signed to a five-year deal.
Herrlich has been given a chance to turn things around at Leverkusen but it won’t be easy. His team struggled in the preseason, especially in the back end. The additions of Sven Bender and Kohr should help but the team really needs some of their young players to deliver.
Leverkusen was a major disappointment a year ago in the Bundesliga and they may not be much better this year. Levekusen was just 5-6 at home with six draws, so if they are to have any chance of making a run at a European spot they must improve their home record. Leverkusen was 6-9 on the road a year ago with two draws.
Leverkusen is no threat to get a Top 4 spot in 2017-2018 and they will be challenged just to finish in the top half of the table. The team was not that good defensively a year ago, as they allowed 55 goals and their offense figures to be weaker this season without Hernandez. Unless Leverkusen can make at least one major transfer, and perhaps more, the team may not be any better than they were a year ago. A finish between 11th and 15th place looks to be the most likely scenario for Bayer Leverkusen in 2017-2018.
