FC Cologne, or FC Koln if you prefer, is coming off a very successful season a year ago, as they finished 5th in the Bundesliga to qualify for the Europa League. Duplicating that success in 2017-2018 will not be easy, as the team must replace leading scorer Anthony Modeste who had 25 of the team’s 51 goals in all competitions last season. Koln is hoping that the addition of Yuya Osako will help pick up some of the slack, in addition to Jhon Cordoba who joined from Mainz.

Odds To Win Bundesliga: +2500 (Field)

FC Cologne is not a threat to win the Bundesliga, as they are part of the field at odds of +2500. They should be probably be safe in terms of relegation even though they lost Modeste in the off-season. Whether or not Cologne can duplicate their 5th place finish of a year ago is the question and based on what the team did in the off-season it seems unlikely.

FC Cologne 2017-18 Predictions

The early part of last season went really well for Cologne, as they won six of their first 11 games. They missed Timo Horn who got hurt but when he came back the team thrived. The team relied heavily on Modeste who scored almost half of their goals for the season.  Cologne went 9-2 at home last season with six draws, as they outscored opponents by a combined margin of 29-17. That record will be very difficult to match this season. They were 3-7-7 on the road a year ago, being outscored by a combined margin of 25-22.

The addition of Cordoba should help, but Cologne is going to need other players like Artjoms Rudnevs, Lukas Klunter and Yuya Osako to come through. They will also need Marcel Risse and Milos Jojic to do more on offense.

The defense for Cologne is really good, but only if Horn stays healthy. He gets help in the back from Jonas Hector, Lukas Klunter and Pawel Olkowski. Cologne will need more players to step up this season because they have the added pressure of playing in the Europa League.

Where Cologne finishes in the Bundesliga could very well be determined by how Cordoba does in replacing Modeste. Cologne is paying him a lot of money and they may have overpaid, considering he wasn’t that great with Mainz.

Peter Stoger is an excellent defensive coach and he is going to need to have his team organized this season because goal scoring could be a major problem. Many of the newcomers for Cologne this season are defenders, but the concern isn’t defense, it’s scoring.

The loss of Modeste is definitely going to hurt and with the added pressure of the Europa League will not give Cologne much chance to rest. Matching last year’s 5th place finish seems highly unlikely. Don’t forget that Cologne benefited greatly from a weak group of contenders past the top three in the Bundesliga last season. It could be a fall to the middle of the table to 9th or 10th place for FC Cologne in 2017-2018 and if the wheels totally fall off the team could fall a great deal further than just to 10th place.
