Hoffenheim was a nice surprise a year ago, as they finished fourth to clinch a spot in the Champions League. Andrej Kramaric had 15 league goals last season and manager Julian Nagelsmann did an excellent job of having his team ready to play on a weekly basis. The team was unbeaten at home last season and they held their own on the road. Hoffenheim is still behind Bayern and Leipzig in the Bundesliga but they might be able to make another run at a European spot this season.

Hoffenheim doesn’t get much respect from the oddsmakers, as the team is listed as part of the field even though they finished in fourth place last season. Hoffenheim is probably not a threat to Bayern, but perhaps they should at least be in the same conversation as Dortmund when it comes to a challenger.

What's New?

Hoffenheim brought in Serge Gnabry on loan from Bayern Munich, Florian Grillitsch from Werder Bremen, Justin Hoogma from Heracles, Havard Nordtveit from West Ham United, Nico Schulz from Borussia Monchengladbach, Robert Zulj from Greuther Furth, Robin Hack from Academy, Stefan Posch from Academy and Meris Skenderovic from Academy.

The addition of Gnabry could be a key one. He is just 22-years old and Bayern has high hopes he will be a future star. The team is letting him join Hoffenheim this season in hopes he develops. "It was Serge's expressed wish to spend another year on loan in order to gain more match practice," Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a club statement. "In my opinion, that's guaranteed at Hoffenheim at a high level too. Gnabry will return to Bayern after a year. In the name of Bayern, I wish Serge Gnabry all the best in Hoffenheim and also thank TSG for the serious and constructive talks which led to this agreement."

What's Gone?

The team lost Baris Atik on loan to Kaiserslautern, Antonio Colak to Ingolstadt, Benedikt Gimber on loan to Jahn Regensburg, Nicolai Rapp to Erzgebirge Aue, Sebastian Rudy to Bayern Munich, Fabian Schar to Deportivo La Coruna, Pirmin Schwegler to Hannover and Niklas Sule to Bayern Munich.

TSG Hoffenheim 2017-18 Predictions

Hoffenheim was a major surprise last season, as they didn’t even lose their first game until late January. Nagelsmann proved he is one of the top managers in the league, leading the team to a Champions League berth. Hoffenheim has plenty of talented players including Andrej Kramaric who was the team’s top scorer a year ago. He may get some help this season from Serge Gnabry.

The problem for Hoffenheim this season is two-fold. First, they are not going to go under the radar, as teams will be ready for them this season. Last year they were underestimated on a regular basis and that won’t be the case this season.  Second, Hoffenheim will be playing in the Champions League so their depth will be severely tested. Hoffenheim will have to show they have more than just a few players if they expect to thrive this season.

It could be that Hoffenheim came too far, too fast a year ago. You see it all the time in sports, as teams surprise one season and fall the next. That could happen to Hoffenheim in 2017-2018. They probably still have enough talent to make a run at a Europa League spot but it is definitely not a given, as a step back to a 10th or 11th place finish might be more likely than another 4th place finish.
