Challenging for a championship in French Ligue 1 is about as tough as it gets. AS Monaco did break the mold in the 2016-17 season, racking up one of its best seasons in its history while unseating PSG at the top of the table. Still, the idea of any other team coming up and knocking off the triumvirate of Monaco, PSG and Lyon is a tough sell in 2016-17.

AS Monaco

Monaco scored a whopping 107 goals last year en route to its 95 points and its comfortable Ligue 1 title. It was a championship that largely came out of nowhere, though most realize that AS Monaco is a sleeping giant every given year.

Angers

Last season had the potential to be a tough one for Angers, especially with so many teams sitting in the relegation scrap. The club survived and finished 12th, and a similar go at it this year would be considered a success.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is back in the Europa League after finishing sixth last term. The team was only beaten in nine matches, fourth fewest in the league behind Monaco, PSG and Nice.

Caen

It was nervy down to the very end for Caen, the team that finished in 17th place on the table, just a point beyond Lorient.

Dijon FCO

It was just as nervy for Dijon FCO, a team that also finished with 37 points. That said, at least Dijon only had a -12 goal differential, better than seventh place finisher, Nantes (-14).

Guingamp

Guingamp was impossible to beat at home (12-3-4) and was impossible to not beat when it was on the road (2-5-12). That might seem like a horrible split, but so long as the home form remains even half that good, this is a top flight team.

Lille

Finishing 11th was disappointing for Lille, but this really is what it is at this point for a club that hasn't seriously challenged for a title since winning the league in 2010-11.

Lyon

Lyon won seven straight French titles from 2001-02 through 2007-08, but since that point, it hasn't bested its three second place finishes.

Marseille

Even though you think of Lyon, PSG and Monaco as the top teams in France, it's actually Marseille who has the most championships all-time in Ligue 1 with 10.

Metz

Metz had itself an odd season last year. The team finished with a -33 goal differential and allowed 72 goals, both the worst marks in Ligue 1. Yet it finished with 43 points and was comfortably up for another season.

Montpellier

It was a frustrating season on the road for Montpellier last year. The team allowed 44 goals in 19 away fixtures, and that led to just a total of 10 points. It was good enough to survive, but there are no guarantees if that's the road form in 2017-18.

Nantes

Nantes was -14 in goal differential last year yet finished seventh. Granted, there wasn't a ton of difference from Nantes in seventh with 51 points and Metz in 14th with 43 points.

Nice

Nice went 14-4-1 last season at home en route to a comfortable third place finish. Any time an "outsider" can outdo one of the big boys as Nice did to Lyon by 11 points, it's a good season.

Paris Saint-Germain

PSG's reign at the top of France came to a close last year, and the team has responded this season by aggressively chasing any and every superstar it can, including Alexis Sanchez and Neymar.

SC Amiens

Amiens survived the gauntlet of Ligue 2 last year, finishing second, just two goals better than Troyes to avoid the promotion playoff.

St. Etienne

At 12-14-12, St. Etienne was as nicely poised as you could be last year. The team was one of the many who beat the ones it should beat and lost to the ones it should have lost to, and that's setting up another mid-table finish this year in all likelihood.

Stade Rennes

Stade Rennes scored just 10 goals away from home last year, nine fewer than relegated Lorient and two fewer than bottom-feeding Bastia. Yet its fine 10-6-3 mark at home was enough to finish ninth best.

Strasbourg

It came down to the very last day of the Ligue 2 season, but Strasbourg survived, won the league and earned promotion up to the top flight.

Toulouse

There were several moments where Toulouse looked like it was going to be in a relegation scrap last year, but a solid defensive record with just 41 goals allowed in 38 matches kept it above the line for much of the year.

Troyes

Troyes' 2016-17 season will be remembered for its valiant effort against Lorient in the promotion/relegation playoff. After winning 2-1 at home in the first leg, the team held on tight on the road for a scoreless draw to earn coveted promotion.
