Could Marseille be the team to break into the top 3 in Ligue 1this season? The club finished with 62 points last season, good for 5th place and a Europa League spot. There is reason to be optimistic about 207-2018, as the club will have Dimitri Payet for a full season and Florian Thauvin is coming off his best season. Marseille will also have Rudi Garcia from the start of the season. The concern for Marseille is the age of their club, as many of their best players are past their prime. Whether they have a big run left in them is the question.

Marseille French Ligue 1 Odds

Odds To Win French Ligue 1: +2000

Marseille is probably not a threat to PSG to win Ligue 1 but the odds really don’t indicate that fact, as Marseille is listed at +2000. Marseille can definitely compete with a weaker Monaco club and with Nice, so there is a case to be made for a Top 3 finish. Competing with PSG for the top spot in the league seems unlikely.

Marseille 2017-18 Predictions

If you followed Marseille last season they probably drove you nuts, as they were great one game and rotten the next. They would go from getting a lot of shots on target to getting next to none. Marseille was a good home team but a poor road squad. They went 13-2 with 4 draws at home, outscoring opponents by a combined 33-13. They were just 4-8 with 7 draws on the road, being outscored 28-24.

Marseille will rely heavily on Thauvin, Sanson, Lopez and Payet to make plays this season. They will miss Gomis who is at Galatasaray but they did bring in Germain from Monaco.  The defense for Marseille might be improved with the additions of Adil Rami from Sevilla and Luiz Gustavo from Wolfsburg.

It could be now or never for Marseille, as Mitroglou is 29-years old, Payet is 30 years old, Gustavo is 30, Rami turns 32 in December and Patrice Evra is 36.  There is no doubt that Marseille can score goals so if they play solid defensively they have a good chance to contend for a top 3 finish this season.

The concern for Marseille is of course, their road play. They struggled away from home last season, losing twice as many games as they won. That can’t happen again if Marseille is to contend for a Champions League spot. PSG is almost a given to finish first and Monaco looks like a solid second. That means Marseille has to beat everyone else in the league to finish third. Is it possible? Yes.  Marseille has a lot of talented players, although they are getting a bit long in the tooth. Marseille should be able to coax at least another year from their key players and that means a third place finish is definitely possible for the club in 2017-2018.
