Lyon is coming off a successful season, as they finished fourth in Ligue 1 and qualified for the Europa League. They made a number of moves in the off-seasons, some good and some bad, as they sold Corentin Tolisso to Bayern and let Mathieu Valbuena and Maxime Gonalons get away but they added Bertrand Traore, Mariano Diaz and Ferland Mendy. Lyon still has two excellent scorers in Memphis Depay and Nabil Fekir so they should be in good shape. Whether they have enough to get a top 3 spot is the question.

Lyon is probably not a serious threat to win Ligue 1, as they are still behind both PSG and Monaco. The big question is whether or not Lyon can finish in third place and get a Champions League spot. It is definitely not out of the question, as they finished nine points behind Nice for third place last season.

What's New?
Lyon added Marcelo from Besiktas, Clement Grenier from AS Roma, Bertrand Traore from Chelsea, Mariano Diaz from Real Madrid, Marcal from SL Benfica, Ferland Mendy from Havre AC, Kenny Tete from Ajax and Romain Del Castillo from France FC Bourg-Peronnas.
Lyon made some good off-season moves but their president, Jean-Michel Aulas said that they simply can’t compete with a team like PSG who signed Neymar. "I do not want to sound like I am against the arrivals of great players like Neymar, who can make Ligue 1 extremely visible and positively impact the next television rights deal," Aulas told JDD via L'Equipe. "However, this boost in attraction will not compensate for the loss of revenue related to our absence from the Champions League.
What's Gone?
The team lost Corentin Tolisso to Bayern Munich, Alexandre Lacazette to Arsenal, Rachid Ghezzal, Christophe Jallet to OGC Nice, Jean-Philippe Mateta on loan to Havre AC, Maxime Gonalons to AS Roma, Gaetan Perrin on loan to US Orleans, Jordy Gaspar to Monaco, Aldo Kalulu on loan to FC Sochaux, Mathieu Valbuena to Fenerbahçe, Maciej Rybus to Lokomotiv Moscow and Olivier Kemen on loan to Gazélec Ajaccio.
Lyon 2017-18 Predictions
The additions of Traore from Chelsea and Díaz from Real Madrid should be good ones but it will be interesting to see if have done enough to replace Lacazette. The club definitely needs to do more to replace Tolisso, Valbuena and Gonalons.
Lyon scores plenty of goals but last season they were just 10th in goals allowed. They may be even worse on defense this season without Gonalons who is now at Roma. They may be okay in terms of goal scoring, as Traore might be able to replace Lacazette.
Lyon was a solid home team a year ago, as they went 12-6 at home with one draw, outscoring opponents by a combined 46-26. They went 9-7 on the road with three draws, outscoring opponents by a combined 31-22. You can make a decent case that Lyon should have similar numbers this season. They are simply going to try and play high scoring games and outscore the opposition. That style of play will work against most teams but against PSG and Monaco they will be in trouble, and that style may also get them into some difficulty against a team like Marseille.
Lyon is a team that has a chance to finish in third place and claim a Champions League spot for next season. They are not in the class of PSG and probably behind Monaco, but Lyon can definitely contend for third place in Ligue 1 in 2017-2018.
