It could be a tough season for Caen, as they finished just one point clear of the relegation zone a year ago in Ligue 1 and they did very little to improve their club in the off-season. Caen scored just 36 goals last season and none of the additions that the team brought in are expected to contribute in a big way offensively this season. It may be very difficult for Caen to avoid relegation in 2017-2018.

Caen was very fortunate last season to avoid relegation, as they were outscored by 29 goals on the season. They were the third-worst offensive team in the league and the third-worst on defense. They somehow found a way to pick up two wins and five draws on the road and that was how they survived. They may not be as fortunate this season unless they improve defensively.

What's New?

The team added Alexander Djiku from SC Bastia, Baissama Sankoh from EA Guingamp, Stef Peeters from Sint-Truidense VV, Adama Mbengue from Diambars FC, Christian Kouakou from Nimes Olympique, Jordan Nkololo from Stade Lavallois and Brice Samba from Olympique de Marseille.

What's Gone?

The team lost Nicolas Seube who retired, Jordan Adeoti to AJ Auxerre, Steed Malbranque who retired, Syam Ben Youssef to Kasimpasa, Jean-Victor Makengo to OGC Nice, Chaker Alhadhur on loan to La Berrichonne de Chateauroux, Pape Sane on loan to AJ Auxerre, Frederic Guilbert on loan to Girondins de Bordeaux, Paul Reulet on loan to US Boulogne, Christopher Operi to La Berrichonne de Chateauroux and Exauce Ngassaki o Stade Brestois. The team also lost Yann Karamoh to Inter Milan. He made 35 Ligue 1 appearances last season and scored a total of five goals.

Caen 2017-18 Predictions

It does not look promising for Caen heading into the 2017-2018 season. The team finished with just 37 points last season, on point above the relegation zone. They were 7-10 at home with two draws and it was ugly at times, as they were outscored by a combined margin of 37-21. They were 3-11 on the road with five draws, outscored by a combined margin of 28-15.

Team President Jean-François Fortin said in the off-season that he needed to "review the team in all lines." Fortin brought back Patrice Garande as manager but his leash could be short if the team gets off to a slow start.

Caen is going to struggle to score goals again this season so if they are to be successful they will have to play excellent defense and get solid play in goal. Is it possible?  Yes.  Is it likely? Not for the long run. Caen was awful offensively last season and it is hard to see how they score any more goals than they did a year ago considering they brought in virtually no scoring options in the off-season. The defense might be marginally improved, so there is at least some reason for hope in improving the goals against.

Caen is likely to be in a relegation fight in 2017-2018. They simply don’t have enough offense to win games on a consistent basis. Perhaps they will be able to steal a few low scoring games that will keep them afloat but it won’t be easy. The team finished in 17th place a year ago and it is hard to see them improving this season. It might go down to the final week to decide whether or not Caen can avoid relegation in Ligue 1 in 2017-2018.
