St. Etienne is coming off an eighth place finish in Ligue 1 a year ago, as they finished with 50 points. They were the ultimate .500 team, as they finished with 12 wins, 12 losses and an amazing 14 draws. They scored 41 goals and gave up 42 goals. If there was ever a team that was completely average it was St. Etienne last season. It might be more of the same in 2017-2018, although they do have a new manager in Oscar Garcia who comes over from Salzburg. The problem for St. Etienne is that they don’t have a lot of talented scorers. They are hoping that the addition of Diony from Dijon will upgrade their offense.

Odds To Win French Ligue 1: +25000
St. Etienne is not really a threat to win Ligue 1 in 2017-2018 but they are also not a team that faces relegation danger. They are probably closer to the upper part of the table than the lower part, especially since Monaco and Nice are much weaker than a year ago. A Europa League spot is definitely within reach for St. Etienne this season and it is not entirely out of the realm of possibility that they could compete for a Champions League spot.

St. Etienne 2017-18 Predictions
St. Etienne could have a bit of a different look this season with Garcia in charge. He led Salzburg to success the past two years and he enters a good situation with St. Etienne. Garcia wants his team to play an attacking style of football but his style is also very dependent on attacking the weakness of opposing teams.
The question that Garcia has to answer this season is who will score the goals. St. Etienne will miss Kevin Malcuit, Jordan Veretout and Henri Saivet. Garcia said the club has enough young players to pick up the slack. There is definitely potential with players like Jonathan Bamba and Assane Diousse.
St. Etienne was 7-3 at home last season with 9 draws, outscoring opponents by a combined 24-18. They went 5-9 on the road with 5 draws, being outscored by a combined 24-17.
St. Etienne is an interesting team for the 2017-2018 season. There are enough question marks at the top of the table beyond PSG and perhaps Monaco that St. Etienne could emerge as a team that could take the third position and a Champions League spot. Everything would have to go really well for that to happen but it is not out of the question.
St. Etienne may struggle a little bit to score goals this season but Garcia should have the team playing more of an attacking style. The club is definitely positioned to take advantage of a top-heavy Ligue 1 and contend for a European spot next season. Whether they can get up to third place and the Champions League is questionable but St. Etienne should finish in the top 7 and get a Europa League spot.
