Bordeaux is coming off a successful season a year ago, as they finished in 6th place and qualified for the Europa League. Bordeaux did lose goal keeper Cedric Carrasso in the off-season but they brought in Benoit Costil to replace him. The team added Alexandre Mendy but it seems unlikely that his addition is enough to replace players like Adam Ounas, Enzo Crivelli and Jeremy Menez. Equaling last season’s 6th place finish might be difficult for Bordeaux in 2017-2018.

Bordeaux is no threat to win Ligue 1, so the question is whether or not they can contend for a top six finish. On paper, it seems unlikely, as the team lost a number of key scorers and did very little to replace them. Bordeaux may be stronger in goal with Costil but it is not like they were weak in goal with Carrasso to begin with. Qualifying for the Europa League won’t be easy for Bordeaux in 2017-2018, as the team looks weaker than a year ago.

What's New?

The team added Lukas Lerager from Zulte Waregem, Youssouf Sabaly from Paris Saint-Germain, Frederic Guilbert from France SM Caen, Nicolas De Preville from Lille, Benoit Costil from Stade Rennes, Vukasin Jovanovic from Zenit St Petersburg and Alexandre Mendy from EA Guingamp.

The addition of De Preville could be an important one, as he scored 14 goals in 30 games last season.

What's Gone?

The team lost Cedric Carrasso, Jeremy Menez to Antalyaspor, Isaac Kiese Thelin to Anderlecht, Abdou Traore, Adam Ounas to Napoli, Nicolas Maurice-Belay, Paul Bernardoni on loan to Clermont Foot, Cedric Yambere to Dijon FCO, Kevin Soni to Girona, Enzo Crivelli to Angers SCO and  Pablo to Corinthians.

Bordeaux 2017-18 Predictions

Costil was considered one of the top goal keepers in Ligue a few years ago so it will be interesting to see how he does this season with Bordeaux. The addition of Mendy looks to be a good one and there is no question that adding De Preville is a big key.

The midfield for Bordeaux looks solid with Toulalan in the center and Sankhare making plays. Bordeaux used a 4-3-3 system last season, as they don’t have a striker who is considered a top scoring threat. Perhaps De Preville can be that man.

Bordeaux is a mystery team, as they could challenge for a top 3 spot if all of their transfers deliver in a big way, but they could also fall into the middle of the table if a couple of them don’t work out. Mendy definitely looks like a good signing and De Preville should score.

Bordeaux has some quality players, as in addition to Mendy and De Preville they have Francois Kamano, Diego Rolan and Gaetan Laborde. If all of those players deliver in a big way then, yes, Bordeaux could contend for a top 3 spot. That is, however, asking a lot and not to be left out of the conversation is Costil.  Is he a top goal keeper in Ligue 1 or are his best days behind him?  If he doesn’t play at a high level then Bordeaux has very little chance at a top 3 finish.

Somewhere in between 3rd place and 10th place seems the most likely scenario for Bordeaux in 2017-2018, so that means they will be right on the cusp of another Europa League spot and it may go down to the final week to see if they finish 6th or 7th.
