Metz finished 14th in Ligue 1 last season and that was considered a major success, as the team was seven points clear of the relegation zone. That finish may be the high water mark for the club, as they look weaker this season without Mevlut Erdincand and Cheick Diabate. The club did bring in Nolan Roux but it seems unlikely his signing will be enough to keep this team out of a relegation fight.

Odds To Win French Ligue 1: +50000
Metz is no threat to win Ligue 1, so it is all about survival this season. Metz had most of their success at home last season, as they won seven games and played to a draw in five others. They had very little success on the road, winning just four times. Metz was outscored by 33 goals last season and that number could be a major red flag heading into the 2017-2018 season.

What's New?
Metz added Geronimo Poblete from CA Colon, Nolan Roux from AS Saint-Etienne, Habib Diallo from Stade Brestois, Moussa Niakhate from Valenciennes FC, Quentin Beunardeau from AFC Tubize and Ibrahima Niane from Generation Foot. The team also added German central defender Philipp Wollscheid from Stoke City. He comes in to replace the departed Simon Falette, who went to the Bundesliga. Two other late signings were Argentine striker Brian Fernandez from Racing Club and Emmanuel Riviere from Newcastle.
The addition of Wollscheid could be a key one, as he has a lot of experience. The club is definitely excited about his potential. "A reinforcement of substance for Les Grenats who will bring his experience of the highest level, he is known for positioning and his strength,'' the club said in a statement.
What's Gone?
The team lost Guido Milan to Veracruz, Mevlut Erdinc to Hannover 96, Franck Signorino, Georges Mandjeck to Sparta Prague, Cheick Diabate to Osmanlispor, David Oberhauser to Platanias, Simon Falette from FC Metz and Hamza Sakhi to AJ Auxerre.
Metz 2017-18 Predictions
It is hard to see anything other than a relegation battle for Metz in 2017-2018. The team did very well last season to finish in 14th place but if you look at the stats, it was a minor miracle they did that well. They were outscored by 33 goals on the season. Somehow they managed a winning record at home but they were awful on the road.
Metz struggled to score goals last season, as they scored just 39 and their defense was terrible, as they allowed 72 goals. It may not be any better this season. Who is going to score goals for the team? Is Roux good enough to carry the offense? It seems highly unlikely. Even if Roux is able to produce at a decent level, there are not a lot of options behind him.
The other major issue for Metz is age. A number of their players are well past their prime including Kawashima, Cohade, Assou-Ekotto, Jouffre and Bisevac. Metz is not only in trouble for this season but the near future doesn’t look that good either.
Metz is almost assuredly going to be in a relegation battle this season. They have very few scoring options and the defense is questionable at best. A relegation fight might actually be the best case scenario for Metz because that means they would actually be fighting for a chance to stay up. The reality is that Metz is probably destined for a last place finish in Ligue 1 in 2017-2018 and relegation.
