Strasbourg makes their return to Ligue 1 in 2017-2018 for the first time since they were relegated following the 2007-2008 season. Strasbourg won Ligue 2 last season to advance to the top tier of French football but to stay in Ligue 1 they will need to find some players to improve their roster. They did add Jonas Martin from Real Betis but manager Thierry Laurey needs more than just Martin if he is to keep his team from getting relegated this season.

Odds To Win French Ligue 1: +50000

Strasbourg has no chance to win Ligue 1 in 2017-2018 and they have no real chance to finish anywhere near the top ten. The question is whether or not they can avoid relegation. Based on what the team did in the off-season it seems unlikely, as Strasbourg simply doesn’t have enough talent to win consistently.

What's New?

The team added Pablo Martinez from Angers SCO, Benjamin Corgnet from AS Saint-Etienne, Kenny Lala from RC Lens, Nuno da Costa from Valenciennes FC, Bingourou Kamara from Tours FC, Idriss Saadi from Cardiff City, Jonas Martin from Real Betis, Bakary Kone on loan from Malaga, Dimitri Foulquier on loan from Watford and Martin Terrier on loan from Lille.

What's Gone?

The team lost Baptiste Guillaume to Lille OSC, Laurent Dos Santos to Valenciennes FC, Felipe Saad to FC Lorient, Khalid Boutaib to Yeni Malatyaspor, Abdelhak Belhameur to US Avranches, Hicham Benkaid to US Orleans and Massire Kante to FC Martigues. The loss of Boutaib is a key one, as he led the team in scoring last season. Strasbourg offered him a contract but he decided to join Yeni Malatyaspor.

Strasbourg 2017-18 Predictions

Anything other than a relegation battle would be a surprise for Strasbourg in 2017-2018. Manager Thierry Laurey did a nice job last season getting his team to the top of Ligue 2 and he was rewarded with a new contract. He won’t have a lot of pressure to avoid relegation simply because not much is expected from his club.

Strasbourg was an excellent home team a year ago, as they went 14-3 with 2 draws in Ligue 2. They outscored opponents by a combined 39-19 at home. They will not have anywhere near that type of home success this season but if they can somehow manage a .500 record at home they could at least be in the fight to avoid relegation. Strasbourg was not a good road team a year ago, as they were 5-6 with 8 draws. They were outscored 28-24 on the road last season.

Strasbourg is going to struggle in Ligue 1 in 2017-2018. They simply don’t score enough goals to compete on a weekly basis. They may have enough defense to keep them in a few games but it is going to be a season-long struggle to score. Who is going to score goals for them this season?  They lost Boutaib and did nothing to replace him. Perhaps Martin can make somewhat of an impact but he is not considered a top scorer.

The one positive for Strasbourg is that the bottom of Ligue 1 is weak, as there are a number of teams that are simply not very good. Strasbourg is definitely one of those teams, so it would be a surprise if they are not in a relegation fight. The odds are against Strasbourg surviving this season but after ten years out of the top tier of French football, fans may just be satisfied to be back for one season.
