Stades Rennes made their goals count last season, as they finished in 9th place in Ligue 1, despite scoring just 36 goals, the third-worst in the league. If Rennes is going to avoid relegation danger this season they will need to improve offensively. The club really didn’t do anything in the off-season to improve their offense, so they may struggle this season. They are also likely to play a lot of low scoring games.

Stade Rennes is no threat to win Ligue 1 so the focus is on staying out of the relegation zone. Rennes is not going to score a lot of goals but they also shouldn’t let in that many, as they gave up just 42 goals last season. The team was solid at home, while they struggled on the road. They may need to pick up more than two road wins this season to avoid the bottom three.

What's New?

The team added Kermit Erasmus from RC Lens, Abdoulaye Diallo from RC Lens from Rizespor, Hamari Traore from Stade de Reims, Faitout Maouassa from AS Nancy, Benjamin Bourigeaud from RC Lens, Brandon Thomas from RCD Mallorca, Jordan Tell from SM Caen, Anthony Ribelin from Paris FC, Wahbi Khazri on loan from Sunderland and they also added Czech international goalkeeper Tomas Koubek from Sparta Praha. He is likely to become the top man in goal this season with Benoit Costil now gone.

What's Gone?

Rennes lost Benoit Costil to Girondins de Bordeaux, Pedro Mendes to Montpellier HSC, Gelson Fernandes to Eintracht Frankfurt, Wesley Said to Dijon FCO, Giovanni Sio to Montpellier HSC, Aldo Kalulu to Olympique Lyonnais, Ermir Lenjani, Sylvain Armand to retirement, and Denis Will Poha on loan to US Orleans.

Stade Rennes 2017-18 Predictions

It is hard to get too excited about what Stade Rennes did in the off-season. Manager Christian Gourcuff is going to have his work cut out for him this season. Owner François Pinault spent some money but most of it was on younger players. Rennes is hoping that Faitout Maouassa, Jordan Tell and Ismaila Sarr all turn into great players. The team did bring in Koubek in goal, but he may not be as good as the player they lost in Costil.

Rennes has a definite problem up front, as they simply don’t have a lot of scorers. They did nothing to replace Sio who left in the off-season. They should have gotten Diafra Sakho but that deal fell through. There are also concerns on the back line and injuries haven’t helped the situation. The late signing of Khazri is a good one and he needs to contribute in a big way right away.

What we do know with Rennes is that they are not going to take many chances under Gourcuff. He has gotten a little bit of heat for his game strategy and if Rennes gets off to a really bad start it would not be a shock to see rumors start surrounding his job security.

Rennes was a good home team last season, as they went 10-3 with 6 draws and it is hard to see how they will do as well at home this season based on their current roster. The team was just 2-9 on the road last season but they did manage 8 road draws.

Rennes is not a contender to finish in the upper half of the table unless things change. They are more likely to flirt with the relegation zone but they will probably find a way to stay up, although they may end up with a new manager before all is said and done.
