Nantes is coming off a successful season a year ago, as they finished in 7th place with 51 points. It may not be easy for Nantes to duplicate that success in 2017-2018, as they did very little in the off-season to improve their club. They also have a new manager, as gone is Sergio Conceiacao who left for FC Porto and in is Claudio Ranieri who had success with Leicester City winning the Premier League, but he was sacked last season after the team started very poorly. Ranieri has his work cut out for him at Nantes, as the team looks much weaker than they were a year ago.

Nantes is no threat to win Ligue 1 but it is possible that they could be a team in relegation danger. It is not that often that a team would go from 7th place to relegation but it is not out of the realm of possibility for Nantes, as they are definitely weaker than they were a year ago. Ranieri is the new manager but it is hard to get too excited about him considering his Leicester City team really struggled last season. Ranieri said he is thrilled to have won the title at Leicester but he wants to put that behind him. "It was fantastic to win the title with Leicester,'' Ranieri said on the club's official website."But we must forget Leicester and work with humility. "Leicester remains something unique. I arrive in a club that has eight titles. I am honored to be here.''

What's New?
Nantes did next to nothing in the off-season. They added Chidozie Awaziem on loan from FC Porto and Joris Kayembe from Portugal FC Porto. Awaziem is just 20-years old and could be a good player going forward but he is one of the only additions.
Ranieri said that he is not happy with what the team did in the off-season. “I am not happy with our transfer window.” Ranieri said to the press, “The president did his best to satisfy me. Now, if you ask me if I am happy, the answer is no. I am not happy, but I understand the difficulties of the window. This window was hard for and for me. I refused some players, but I always said yes to a lot of players that were offered to me, only to find out that it was impossible to sign them.”
What's Gone?
Nantes lost Remy Riou to Alanyaspor, Oswaldo Vizcarrondo to ES Troyes AC, Amine Harit to Schalke 04, Sergio Oliveira to FC Porto and Fernando Aristeguieta to Caracas FC. They may also lose Prejuce Nakoulma who has requested a transfer from the club.
The loss of Riou and Harit definitely hurt, as Riou was the top goalkeeper, while Harit was an attacking midfielder. The club did nothing to replace those two players.
Nantes 2017-18 Predictions
Nantes has been one of the most successful clubs in Ligue 1 and they will probably be safe in terms of relegation but it may not be easy. The team looks much weaker than they were a year ago and let’s not forget that although the team finished in 7th place, they were a -14 in goals differential.
Nantes was nothing special at home a year ago, as they went 8-7 with 4 draws but they were okay on the road, going 6-8 with 5 draws. Nantes was very fortunate to finish in seventh place considering they scored 40 goals and gave up 54. It is hard to see those numbers improving this season, and in fact they will probably be worse.
Nantes is going to fall in 2017-2018, the question is how far. They are not likely to finish in the upper half of the table but they will probably avoid relegation. A finish of 15th place seems the most likely scenario for Nantes in 2017-2018.
