Italy remains one of the more interesting countries to follow with its soccer league. Between Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Roma, Napoli and Fiorentina, there's no shortage of big time teams. But the little guys are starting to rise up, and that's making Serie A a league that can produce some wild results.
AC Milan
With 18 Italian titles to its name, you'd like to think that AC Milan would have a more dominant side than this. Alas, the last title that has rested in Milan came in 2010-11, and the team has only finished third or better twice since that point.
AS Roma
Roma has been a bridesmaid a lot, but is rarely a bride. The team's last title was in 2000-01, yet it has finished second nine times since then.
Atalanta
Merely avoiding any serious threat of relegation would have been a great result last year for Atalanta, yet the team shockingly won 21 matches and finished fourth best to earn a Europa League spot.
Benevento
Here we have a side that has come a long way from being disbanded in 2005. Beneveto has had to fight from the Serie C2 all the way up to Serie A, and it earned its first promotion to the top flight as a "new club" last year by winning the Serie B playoff.
Bologna
If Bologna could amass 41 points every season as it did last year, its supporters would probably be happy. Better could be hoped for, but not being threatened by relegation is the best realistic expectation this team could have.
Cagliari
Cagliari has been up and down a lot in recent years between Serie A and Serie B, but last year's 11th place finish was a solid result and might prompt a longer stay in the top flight.
ChievoVerona
Chievo had some real defensive problems last season, conceding 61 goals, the same number as relegated Empoli.
Crotone
Crotone just barely survived last season with 34 points. There doesn't figure to be a doormat in Serie A this year like US Pescara was when it was relegated, and as a result, there's a good chance that a repeat of the 34-point season will season Crotone back down to Serie B.
Fiorentina
It's been a while since Luca Toni was dominant for Fiorentina. Alas, this team is hoping to really return to greatness soon, knowing that it hasn't finished in the top three since 1998-99.
Genoa
Genoa is another one of these teams that is just hoping to stay up for as long as possible. Any hope of a serious Champions League challenge is ill-conceived for sure.
Hellas Verona
It's not quite like Leicester City winning the Premier League title, but Hellas Verona does have a Scudetto under its belt, albeit over 30 years ago from the 1984-85 season. This is one of the three newly promoted teams to Serie A for 2016-17.
Internazionale
We're not sure which one of the giant Milan sides will be more disappointed with its 2016-17 finish. Inter was one point worse off than AC was, and it's shocking to think that this team was beaten 14 times in 38 matches.
Juventus
It took a little while to officially get Juventus past its match fixing scandal. But the team is back with vengeance now, having won the Scudetto six straight times to up its lead in terms of all-time titles to 33.
Lazio
Lazio has done a nice job staying up towards the top of the Serie A table in recent years, but this team is still miles away from competing with Juventus.
Napoli
Napoli will long kick itself for choking away the championship in 2015-16 to Juventus, but finishing third last year was proof that this team wasn't just a one-hit wonder at the top.
Sampdoria
Fresh off of a season dab smack in the middle of the table, Sampdoria is going to hope to avoid taking any serious steps backwards that could threaten its spot in the top flight.
Sassuolo
Sassuolo was only outscored by five goals last season, a real accomplishment in the top flight for a team that probably figures to be in the relegation scrap most years.
SPAL
It's been 49 years since SPAL was in the top flight. The White-Blues are back, though, and they're doing so after earning successive promotions, a tremendously hard feat in any league at any level.
Torino
Good on Torino for finishing in the top half of the table last year. With Andrea Belotti committed to staying with the club, there's a good chance that Torino could repeat as a top half finisher this year.
Udinese
Udinese has become a victim of its own expectations. Any year the team doesn't at least challenge for a European spot is considered a disappointment, but realistically, this is nothing more than a mid-table team now.
