Udinese will look to improve upon their 13th place finish from a year ago in 2017-2018. They will miss Duvan Zapata who returned to Napoli but they still have French striker Cyril Thereau who scored 12 goals last season. Udinese was busy in the off-season making a number of moves but whether those moves will result in enough improvement to garner an upper table finish is definitely questionable.

Udinese is no threat to win Serie A but they probably have enough talent to avoid relegation danger, so it is all about finishing in the top 10. Luigi Delneri is a good manager but he doesn’t have a lot of scoring talent at his disposal. He will need everything to go right if Udinese is to improve enough to finish in the upper half of the table in 2017-2018.

The team lost Emmanuel Badu on loan to Bursaspor, Duvan Zapata to Napoli, Alex Meret on loan to SPAL and Yrondu Musavu-King on loan to St. Gallen.

Udinese 2017-18 Predictions

Delneri is expected to have a starting lineup this season of Karnezis, Widmer, Danilo, Angella, Samir, Coulibaly, Halfredsson, Jankto, de Paul, Basic and Thereau.

It is hard to know what to expect from Udinese, as they have a new sporting director, as Manuel Gerolin takes over from Nereo Bonato. Gerolin definitely didn’t sit still, as he added left back Giuseppe Pezzella from Palermo in a key move. He also added Bosnian Riad Bajic from Konyaspor who scored 17 times in 32 games last season in the Turkish Super League. Another good move was getting Kevin Lasagna from Carpi.

Udinese really didn’t lose much in the off-season, so there is optimism that the team could be better in 2017-2018. They could be going with Simone Scuffet in goal at some point this season and they have a young midfield duo of Seko Fofana and Andrija Balic. Those young players should get help from veterans like Danilo, Rodrigo De Paul and Cyril Thereau and Lasagna could be a solid contributor.

Udinese went 8-6 at home last season with five draws, outscoring the opposition by a combined margin of 30-23. They were just 4-11 on the road with four draws, getting outscored by a combined 33-17. That road mark must improve if Udinese is to challenge for a top 10 finish this season.

Udinese is got a great team and they are not a terrible team. They have enough talent to make a run at a top 10 position in 2017-2018 but they also don’t have any margin for error. They are a key injury away from finishing near the bottom of the table.

Udinese is one of the more difficult teams to peg for the 2017-2018 season. They don’t have a lot of goal scoring options, as Thereau is not a superstar scorer. Udinese will need him to hit double-digits again this season if they are to have any chance of finishing in the top 10. The club also needs some other players to step up and help him out. Lasagna is definitely capable of providing support, as is de Paul.

The most likely scenario for Udinese is that they finish just outside the top 10 again in 2017-2018, with an 11th or 12th place finish.
