La Liga is effectively just a two-team league. There's Real Madrid. There's Barcelona. And there's a bunch of teams fighting for third. That said, even the gap from Atletico Madrid and Sevilla to the bottom of La Liga is huge, making this one of the most predictable leagues in Europe.

Alaves

Alaves was a nice surprise last year. Most assumed it wouldn't fight for its life in La Liga, but to finish ninth was a tremendous finish.

Athletic Bilbao

Bilbao is one of these teams that seems like it's always in the Europa League. Last year was no exception when the team finished seventh best in Spain, and after winning 13 games at home last year, there's no reason to think that'll change in 2017-18.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid is the only team to have reached the summit of Spanish soccer aside from Barca and Real since the mid-90s. That said, this is definitively nothing more than the third-most talented team in Spain.

Barcelona

The threat of losing Neymar this year is real for Barca. If that's the case, the Catalan side could come back to the pack just a bit and finish a definitive second-best to Real Madrid.

Celta de Vigo

Celta Vigo made some really big strides last season, including challenging Manchester United in the Europa League. The run this team went on was epic, though finishing 13th in La Liga was nothing special.

Deportivo de La Coruna

It feels like Deportivo La Coruna should be a lot better than it is. This was a team that had to spend some time in Segunda after a rough spiral from the top. Now, Deportivo is just scrapping every year to survive.

Eibar

Eibar has survived four straight seasons in the top flight after having never been there before in its past. A 10th place finish last year was the best in this team's history.

Espanyol

Espanyol was the first team left on the outside of European soccer last season. The team is going to hope to take a big jump forward this season, though the Champions League is probably out of the equation.

Getafe

It was a tough run to get into La Liga last year in Segunda, but Getafe took the hard road back to the top flight by winning the playoff.

Girona

Girona won 20 games last season and just barely had enough to get into La Liga. That said, this team is a good bet to head right back to the second division.

Las Palmas

Las Palmas might have only won one match on the road last season, but nine wins at home alone was enough to stay up. Survival is the only goal in 2017-18.

Leganes

The bubble buster from last season, Leganes made it through to another year in La Liga with 35 points. That's a mark that might not be good enough this year to stay up.

Levante

There really seemed to be no reason why Levante dropped into Segunda two seasons ago. Alas, the stay there was short, as Levante won the second division by 14 points and eased its way back into the top flight.

Malaga

The team that can take the most credit for Barcelona not winning La Liga last year was Malaga. Barca managed just one point in the two fixtures against Malaga in 2016-17, including losing 2-0 on a night Neymar was sent off.

Real Betis

It was a disappointing 2016-17 season for Real Betis. The team only won 10 matches and finished with just 39 points, and that won't meet expectations this year for sure. This should be a mid-table team.

Real Madrid

There's no doubt that the Santiago Bernabeu is the best destination in soccer right now. Real won the Champions League and La Liga last season, and anything short of another double will be a disappointment.

Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad picked up 29 points on the road last season, a huge accomplishment for a team that really has never challenged in the top flight. The reward? Europa League action this year.

Sevilla

Sevilla is one of these teams that is always dangerous when it gets into tournament action. After three straight Europa League titles, this is going to be yet another year starting in the Champions League after a fourth place finish.

Valencia

Valencia is one of these teams that has higher expectations than results seemingly every year. Is this club really closer to relegation than European action?

Villarreal

Outside of one strange relegation season in 2011-12, Villarreal has consistently, yet quietly been one of the better teams in Spain. This could be a fifth straight season finishing sixth or better in La Liga.
