Hopes are high at Villarreal that they can challenge for a Top 4 finish in La Liga in 2017-2018. The team finished in fifth place last season and they made some nice moves in the off-season, including getting Carlos Bacca from Sevilla and Enes Unal from Manchester City.  The Yellow Submarine could be a team to watch in La Liga this season, as they look to finish in the Top 4 and get into the Champions League.

There is a lot to like about Fran Escriba’s team heading into the 2017-2018 season. The team is excellent defensively, as a year ago they were second to Atletico Madrid in fewest goals allowed. The team has added striker Carlos Bacca on a season-long loan and he should help an offense that already has Cedric Bakambu and Roberto Soriano. Not to be forgotten is Enes Unal who signed from Manchester City. The questions are whether or not Villarreal has a replacement for the injured Sergio Asenjo in goal and if they can improve offensively.

Villarreal 2017-18 Predictions

Villarreal will be playing in the Europa League this season but the added amount of games shouldn’t be a major issue for The Yellow Submarine. Manager Fran Escriba returns for his second year and they appear to be better on paper than they were a year ago.

Villarreal finished with 67 points last season, just five behind Sevilla for a Champions League spot. Villarreal were very good at home, as they went 11-4-4, outscoring opponents by a combined 35-18. They were also decent on the road, going 8-5 with six draws. They outscored opponents by a combined 21-15 on the road.

The Yellow Submarine should be better but they didn’t look good in the preseason. The problem is goal scoring, as Villarreal simply doesn’t have a lot of firepower. The club was excellent on defense last season but their defense is weakened with the loss of Mussachio and who knows when Asenjo will return in goal. The early part of the season will be a test for Villarreal, as they will be without Mario Gaspar, Denis Cheryshev, Sergio Asenjo, Adrian Marin, Bruno Soriano and Jaume Costa. The team also has to deal with early suspensions to Samu Castillejo and Cedric Bakambu.

Villarreal is a popular pick to do well in La Liga in 2017-2018 but the injuries are a major concern. The lack of scoring is also very troubling, especially with the defense weaker than a year ago and a major question in goal. Picking Valencia to finish in the Top 4 may be too optimistic considering the preseason trouble and with all of the injuries.

Villarreal seems destined for another finish just outside the Top 4 in La Liga in 2017-2018 unless they can get some transfer help to improve their scoring and to give them some security in goal until Asenjo returns. A 5th or 6th place finish seems the most likely scenario for The Yellow Submarine in 2017-2018.
