Espanyol surprised a few people last season, as they finished in 8th place in La Liga, just short of a spot in the Europa League. Manager Quique Sanchez Flores did a nice job, as he molded a number of new players into a competent squad. Things have been quieter for the Periquitos heading into the 2017-2018 season than they were a year ago, but optimism is still high that the team can make a run at a European spot this season. Espanyol made permanent the loan deals for Diego Lopez and Pablo Piatti and they picked up Naldo from Turkey. The question is whether Espanyol did enough to challenge for 7th place in La Liga this season.

Espanyol is not good enough to challenge for the La Liga title and that is not a realistic goal. They also appear to be in no danger to be relegated and a Top 4 finish seems unlikely. The goal for the Periquitos is to finish in the Top 7 and secure a spot in the Europa League.

Espanyol 2017-18 Predictions
Manager Quique Sanchez said that the team needs to add at least a few players if they are to be upper level contenders this season. They may need to add even more if Alvaro Vazquez or Hernan Perez ends up leaving. Sanchez said that he wants to add another central defender, a midfielder and a full back. The team is hoping to get Didac Vila from AEK Athens. Espanyol is also looking at Sergi Darder who is with Lyon. Espanyol is also hoping to hang onto Gerard Moreno who is said to be a target of Villarreal.
Espanyol finished with 56 points last season but they were no real threat to 7th place Atheltic Bilbao who finished with 63 points. Espanyol was nothing special at home, as they went 8-6 with five draws. They did play pretty well on the road though, going 7-6-6. If Espanyol is to make enough improvement to challenge for 7th place this season they will need to improve their home mark.
Espanyol has been one of those teams that finish in the middle of the table every year. They don’t normally face any relegation danger and they don’t challenge for a Top 4 position. That may be the case again in 2017-2018. Espanyol didn’t do anything of note in the off-season to improve from last year but they also didn’t really lose anything. The question is whether they can pick up another 7-10 points to challenge for a European spot.
Another mid-table finish seems the most likely scenario for Espanyol in 2017-2018. Fans are hoping the team can make a run at 7th place but unless the team makes some more additions before the transfer season closes, that seems unlikely. A 9th or 10th place finish seems the most likely scenario for Espanyol this season.
