Another new era begins in San Francisco in 2017, as John Lynch takes over as general manager and Kyle Shanahan takes over as the new head coach. The 49ers have been a mess since they let Jim Harbaugh go, as they have gone 5-11 and 2-14 the last two years. It would be hard for San Francisco to be worse than they were a year ago when they won just two games, but this franchise is definitely in rebuilding mode. Oddsmakers don’t think San Francisco is going to do much this season, as the win total for the 49ers for 2017 is set at 4.5.
San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl Odds
Super Bowl Odds: +22500
NFC Championship Odds: +9998
NFC West Odds: +4500
Odds 49ers Make Playoffs: +1500
49ers Regular Season Win Total: 4.5
The 49ers are given no shot of winning the Super Bowl, as they have the longest odds on the board of any team in the NFC at +22500. San Francisco is also given virtually no chance of being competitive in the NFC West, as they are listed at odds of +4500 to win the division. The 49ers won only two games last season so success for San Francisco this season may be just winning four or five games.

The San Francisco 49ers Will Be a Success If…
They win more games than they did a year ago. The bar is definitely not set very high, as San Francisco won just two games a year ago. Shanahan should greatly improve the offense and the 49ers have some good building blocks in place.
Much of the focus in 2017 will be on the offense, as Shanahan did wonders in Atlanta with Matt Ryan. San Francisco should be much better under center, as gone is Colin Kaepernick and in is Brian Hoyer, who started 13 games for Cleveland last season. Hoyer isn’t a great quarterback but he is competent and he can run Shanahan’s offense.
The 49ers went out and got Hoyer some help, as they added Pierre Garcon, Marquise Goodwin and Aldrick Robinson. They also brought back Jeremey Kerley who had a career season. San Francisco has a good offensive line led by Joe Staley and they have some talented runners led by Carlos Hyde.
The San Francisco 49ers Will Be a Failure If…
They are not better on defense. The 49ers were last in the NFL in total defense last season, as the allowed over 400 yards per game. They gave up 2,654 yards on the ground, the most in franchise history and they gave up 30 points per game.
San Francisco brought in former Jacksonville Jaguars linebackers coach Robert Saleh to take over as defensive coordinator. He has had some good training under Pete Carroll and Gus Bradley. Sale said that stopping the run will be the top priority this season.
The 49ers made some good defensive picks in the NFL Draft, as they took defensive end Solomon Thomas and linebacker Reuben Foster in the first round. The 49ers also get a healthy NaVorro Bowman who has missed most of the past two years due to injury. San Francisco also signed linebacker Malcolm Smith, nose tackle Earl Mitchell and pass rusher Elvis Dumervil in free agency.
San Francisco 49ers 2017 Predictions
The 49ers have a reasonable schedule, as they play the 20th-most difficult schedule in the NFL in 2017. The 49ers will definitely not be as bad as they were a year ago but they are not going to contend for a playoff spot. The question is whether or not they can win five games and go over their win total of 4.5.
San Francisco made some really nice off-season moves on both sides of the ball and Lynch and Shanahan have been given long-term contracts. The offense will be far better with Shanahan calling plays and Hoyer under center and the defense will benefit greatly from not being on the field the entire game as they were under Chip Kelly. The 49ers may be able to surprise a few teams this season and it is not out of the question that they could triple their wins from last year and go from 2-14 to 6-10 in 2017.
