The Philadelphia Eagles enter the 2017 with a lot of optimism, as they have a franchise quarterback in Carson Wentz and two new weapons for him to throw to in Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith. The Eagles won seven games in Wentz’s rookie season and they could be poised for bigger things this year. Oddsmakers believe the Eagles will be better, as the total wins for Philadelphia was set at eight. Philadelphia does not have an easy schedule, as it ranks as the 10th-toughest in the league, but if the defense can improve, the Eagles might be a team that can challenge for the NFC East title in 2017 and make the playoffs.
Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Odds
Super Bowl Odds: +4500
NFC Championship Odds: +2100
NFC East Odds: +340
Odds Eagles Make Playoffs: +200
Eagles Regular Season Win Total: 8
The Eagles are getting some respect from the oddsmakers, as they are not a huge longshot to win either the Super Bowl or the NFC. The Eagles are definitely a contender to win the NFC East at odds of +340. The Eagles have missed the playoffs in each of the past three seasons, and oddsmakers have listed them at +200 to make it this season. To make the playoffs the Eagles will likely have to win at least 10 games, which would mean they go over their win total of 8.

The Philadelphia Eagles Will Be a Success If…
The defense is better. The Eagles were not terrible last season, as they were 12th in points allowed and 13th in yards allowed but the secondary was a major problem. It is hard to win in today’s NFL when your secondary is rotten. The team let go Nolan Carroll and Leodis McKelvin but that might not be bad news, as neither was very good. The team brought back Ron Brooks and they signed Patrick Robinson but the real hope for the Eagles is that Rasul Douglas from West Virginia and Sidney Jones from Washington will be immediate starters. The good news is that both Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod return at safety.
The Eagles also need better play at linebacker, as their only reliable starter is Jordan Hicks. The team selected Nate Gerry from Nebraska in the fifth round. They are hoping to convert him from safety to linebacker.
The Eagles did sign Chris Long in the off-season and they hope he has something left to provide a pass-rushing threat, and the team traded with Baltimore for tackle Timmy Jernigan. Those two players will join Derek Barnett who the Eagles took in the first round of this year’s draft along with tackle Fletcher Cox and end Brandon Graham.
The Philadelphia Eagles Will Be a Failure If…
The offensive line can’t protect Wentz. Last season was a big one for Wentz who set an NFL record for most completions by a rookie in a season with 370. He threw for 3,782 yards and had the team in contention for much of the year. Wentz should improve on those numbers this season simply because he now has some decent receivers to throw to. Jeffery is a clear number one receiver and Smith is an excellent number two. The Eagles also have a solid tight end in Zach Ertz and good receivers out of the backfield led by Darren Sproles. The Eagles signed LeGarrette Blount to pound the rock and hopefully take the pressure off of Wentz.
None of the new additions will matter if the Eagles can’t keep Wentz protected. The Eagles return Jason Kelce at center and it looks like he will be flanked by Brandon Brooks and Allen Barbre along with Lane Johnson and Jason Peters. Johnson was suspended last year and another PED violation would send him out of the league for two years and Peters is an injury waiting to happen. If the offensive line can’t stay healthy and be productive, the Eagles have no chance to win in 2017.
Philadelphia Eagles 2017 Predictions
The Eagles finished 7-9 last season under head coach Doug Pederson in the rookie season for Wentz. The future looks bright for Philadelphia, as they upgraded the offense with the additions of Jeffery and Smith and the defense has the potential to be improved if they can get some solid play out of the secondary.
The problem for Philadelphia is a schedule that has very few soft spots. If things go well for the Eagles, and Wentz plays at a high level then Philadelphia could go 10-6 and challenge for the NFC East title this season. Conversely, if Wentz has a sophomore slump the Eagles could finish 7-9 again this year. The most likely scenario is somewhere in the middle, which would put the Eagles at 8-8 or 9-7 this season.
