Derek Carr is a very rich man. This offseason, he signed one of the largest deals in NFL history. The Oakland Raiders knew they found themselves a gem with the young quarterbacking Carr, and now, he's the official face of the franchise and should be for the next decade. The Raiders were back in the second season last year for the first time since winning Super Bowl XXXVIII. The stay was short in a 27-14 loss to the Texans in Houston, but clearly, the table is set for this team to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender for the next several seasons.
Oakland Raiders Super Bowl Odds
Super Bowl Odds: +1500
AFC Championship Odds: +700
AFC West Odds: +170
Odds Raiders Make Playoffs: -165
Raiders Regular Season Win Total: 9.5
It's been a decade and a half since the Raiders were anywhere near favorites to get into the playoffs. Now, they're here as -165 choices to play in the second season for a second consecutive year.
It's hardly a lock, though. The AFC West is a brutally tough division, and you could argue a case for any of those four teams winning at least 10 games and making the playoffs. That's why Oakland's over/under is just 9.5 wins.
If the Raiders do get in and do get a chance to host a playoff game or two, look out. This franchise seems poised and ready to make that next logical step. Is a 15 to 1 price to win the Super Bowl a bit optimistic? Maybe. But the Raiders are legit.

The Oakland Raiders Will Be a Success If…
... They can handle the pressure of playing in the biggest games on the biggest stage.
This is the next big step for Oakland as a team and an organization. The Raiders won 12 games last season, but the ones they lost were the biggest of the year. They were taken out by Atlanta, Kansas City twice and Denver, then failed in the opening round of the playoffs against Houston. Big wins? There really weren't man. The Raiders merely won one game against a playoff team all season long, that being the Texans in Mexico City in November.
The Raiders are in primetime five times this season and will surely have at least a couple of those big "games of the week" on Sundays at 4:25 p.m. ET. That's a lot of pressure to put on a really young team, and how Oakland responds will determine whether it will be a success or a failure in 2017.
The Oakland Raiders Will Be a Failure If…
… The Marshawn Lynch experiment turns out to be a disaster.
The Raiders are putting a lot of stock in a man who didn't play football last season. Lynch is a monster of a running back, but how much could he really bring to the table after taking last year off? If he's a 1,000-yard back, Carr can do the rest. But if Carr is asked to throw the ball 650 times this year, we're not sure this offense is going to be good enough in the face of a much tougher schedule to succeed.
Latavius Murray, Jalen Richard and DeAndre Washington combined to run for 1,746 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. Richard and Washington are back, but Murray is gone. His 195 carries will have to be put in the gut of Beast Mode.
Oakland Raiders 2017 Predictions
Oakland isn't a 12-win team this season, but we still think it's going to get into the postseason, perhaps as the AFC West champion. The bad news is that the AFC West is going to be the most competitive division in the NFL. The good news is that nobody should do better than 4-2 in this foursome.
The ceiling for the Raiders is clearly the Super Bowl. Carr was a legitimate MVP contender last season, and he could breakthrough this year and win it. If he does, there might not be any stopping this team.
There are still holes, and the Patriots are still in Oakland's way in the end. Yet the Raiders still seem to be perhaps the only team that could stand in New England's way in the AFC this year.
