The New Orleans Saints have been a disappointing team for the past three seasons, as they have gone 7-9 each year. The Saints still have Sean Payton as their head coach and Drew Brees as their quarterback, but fans are getting restless in New Orleans. The Saints went out and made a big splash by signing Adrian Peterson but how far they go this season will likely be determined by how much improvement the defense shows. The Saints play in a very difficult division and oddsmakers are not sure what to expect from the Saints, as they set the win total for the team at 8 for the 2017 regular season.
New Orleans Saints Super Bowl Odds
Super Bowl Odds: +5000
NFC Championship Odds: +2300
NFC South Odds: +405
Odds Saints Make Playoffs: +210
Saints Regular Season Win Total: 8
There are no real longshots in the NFC South as any of the four teams could win the division. The Saints are given a chance at +405 but oddsmakers are not sure what to make of the team, as they put the odds of them making the playoffs at +210 and set a break even win total of 8 games. The Saints might have some value in Super Bowl odds at +5000, as teams have gone from nowhere to the Super Bowl in this division before. The Saints have a reasonable schedule, as they face the 15th-most difficult schedule in the NFL for 2017.

The New Orleans Saints Will Be a Success If…
The defense is just average. The Saints score plenty of points but they give them up just as fast as they score them. New Orleans was next to last in the NFL in points allowed last season, as they gave up 28.4 points per contest. The Saints were okay against the run, as they ranked 14th in the league but they were last against the pass. It is impossible to win in today’s NFL if your defense can’t stop the pass.
The Saints need better play from their defensive line to pressure opposing quarterbacks so their secondary isn’t always forced to cover receivers too long. Cameron Jordan is a good defensive end but he is not a great pass rusher. Sheldon Rankins is good against the run but he is nothing special in terms of rushing the passer and the Saints have to find someone to replace Nick Fairley who is out for the year. New Orleans did sign Alex Okafor in free agency and they hope he can provide a pass rush.
The Saints made a number of off-season moves to improve a bad linebacking corps. They added Manti Te’o, A.J. Klein and rookie Alex Anzalone. The Saints need someone to step up and help a secondary that has some talent. The Saints feature Kenny Vaccaro and they get Delvin Breaux fully healthy for this season. New Orleans got Marshon Lattimore in the NFL Draft and he was the top-rated corner in the draft.
The New Orleans Saints Will Be a Failure If…
Brees starts to show his age. Brees is 38 years old but he is still playing at a high level. What happens if he starts to slow down? He will miss Brandin Cooks who went to New England but he still has Michael Thomas and Willie Snead. What would help Brees is a solid running game and that is where Adrian Peterson may come in. He could have a lot left at 32-years old and he is motivated to have a great season.
The concern for New Orleans is the offensive line, as center Max Unger suffered an off-season injury and is expected to miss the start of the regular season. The Saints signed Larry Warford to replace Jahri Evans and New Orleans still has tackles Zach Strief and Terron Armstead. The Saints also took Ryan Ramczyk in the NFL Draft.
New Orleans Saints 2017 Predictions
The Saints believe they are poised for a really good season but it feels like the team is held together with chewing gum. The Saints are hoping that Brees can stay healthy and productive at 38 years old and they hope Peterson still has greatness in him at age 32. Even if the Saints do get big seasons from Brees and Peterson it may not be enough because the defense still isn’t very good. History could be on their side, as the Saints went 7-9 and 8-8 in 2007 and 2008 and then went 13-3 in 2009 and won the Super Bowl.
The Saints would seem to be poised for a bounce back season but the early part of their schedule is difficult, as they face three of their first four games on the road. If they can survive the early part of the season then perhaps the Saints can go 9-7 and get into playoff contention in 2017.
