It's not that the New England Patriots needed last year's stunning comeback from down 28-3 to beat the Atlanta Falcons to firm up their dynasty. It's that their Super Bowl 51 victory only further cemented what is one of the truly great runs in the history of the NFL. Now, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are going for their sixth Lombardi Trophy in 2017 and are the overwhelming favorites to get it.

The New England Patriots Will Be a Success If…

… Brady stays healthy. There really isn't anything bad to say about the Patriots at this point. They're coming off of a 14-2 season in which they finished in the top 10 in the NFL in both total offense and total defense, and they only further stocked up in the offseason by bringing in Kona Ealy and Brandin Cooks in free agency.

Even if New England was to take a step in the wrong direction and only win 11 or 12 games, there's no reason that it won't win the AFC East. The rest of this division is atrocious, and there almost certainly isn't more than a 10-win team in the bunch.

The Patriots effectively don't have a meaningful game to play until the second week of January, and for as long as they're home for the postseason, they're going to be the hardest team to oust from the playoffs.

The New England Patriots Will Be a Failure If…

… the offense's two key additions, Cooks and Dwayne Allen don't fit into the mold. Brady has been proven to be able to work with pretty much any boards with angry faces and two hands at wide receiver, but as he gets up there in age, he's going to need more help.

Let's remember that LeGarrette Blount is gone, and there isn't a power back on this roster who can be expected to carry the ball 20 times game in and game out. That means more pressure on Brady to keep spreading the ball around. If Allen isn't effective and something happens to Rob Gronkowski, the tight end matchups that New England have exploited for years and years won't be there. If Cooks doesn't prove to be a deep threat stretching the field, we're not sure if he can be all that effective of a receiver in this offense.

Yes, the New England defense was No. 1 in the NFL in scoring last season, but it was also was +12 in turnover margin, a feat that will be tough to replicate. History would suggest that some regression is in order.

New England Patriots 2017 Predictions

It's hard to forecast anything but another New England championship. The Patriots flat out have the best team in the NFL and don't have a lot getting in their way. It's really hard to repeat as Super Bowl champs, and that comes with the variance of playoff football. It only takes one moment of brilliance by an opponent – See: Flacco, Joe in the 2013 postseason – to dismiss any team.

Still, there's no value here. If Brady gets seriously hurt, it'll be Jimmy Garoppolo's show, and we aren't sold that he would justify being a huge favorite to win the Super Bowl at that point. The Patriots play a really rugged schedule that includes road games at New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Denver, Oakland and Pittsburgh. They also play just one home game from October 29 until Christmas Eve. If there's one slip along the way at home or a game lost to a division rival, it'll be really hard to ultimately win the 13 games necessary to beat their regular season win total.

Can you really win a Super Bowl and really classify your season as "underachieving?" The Patriots might test that question in 2017.
