The Los Angeles Rams finally have some optimism heading into 2017, as gone is Jeff Fisher who had not had a winning season as a head coach since 2008 and never had a winning season with the Rams. Los Angeles hired Sean McVay who at 31-years old will be the youngest head coach in NFL history. McVay did wonders with Kirk Cousins in Washington and he will be asked to do the same thing for Jared Goff. Oddsmakers are not sold that the Rams are going to be a contender this season, as they set the win total for the team at 5.5. The Rams are huge longshots to win the Super Bowl at odds of +21500 and they are listed at long odds just to win their own division at +2500.

The Los Angeles Rams Will Be a Success If…
Goff turns into a quality NFL quarterback. It was ugly for Goff in his rookie season, as he started seven games and had virtually no success. He threw for 1,089 yards with five TDs and seven interceptions. The Rams were last in the NFL in yards per game last season and Goff was under constant pressure. The offensive line gave up the second-most sacks in the NFL last season.
McVay realized immediately something that Fisher never did, and that is that quarterback is the most important position in the NFL. Teams win Super Bowls because of great quarterback play. Whether or not Goff can be a great quarterback is still unclear because his rookie season was ruined under Fisher.
The Rams made some nice off-season moves to upgrade the offensive line as they brought in All-Pro left tackle Andrew Whitworth and veteran center John Sullivan to add experience up front.
The Rams have a great talent in running back Todd Gurley but he wasn’t used properly by Fisher. That should change under McVay. The Rams added Robert Woods to take the place of Kenny Britt but they need Tavon Austin to realize his potential.
The Los Angeles Rams Will Be a Failure If…
They can’t run the ball. What happened to Todd Gurley? If you are a fantasy football regular then you probably know all about Gurley’s freefall. Gurley played every game last season and had just 885 yards and a pathetic 3.2 yards per carry. Gurley had over 1,100 yards in just 13 games two years ago and averaged 4.8 yards per carry.
Not all NFL teams have to run the ball a lot to be successful but the Rams do. They have a young quarterback in Goff, no explosive receivers and a defense that can’t afford to be on the field all the time. If the Rams are to win in 2017 they simply have to run the ball effectively and that means a bounce back year from Gurley.
Los Angeles Rams 2017 Predictions
The Rams made a nice hire in McVay and they also made a great hire in bringing in Wade Phillips to run the defense. He led the Broncos defense to a Super Bowl title two years ago. The Rams were decent last year on defense, as they ranked 9th in the league in fewest yards allowed and they should be even better this season under Phillips.
The Rams could be poised for an immediate rise to contender status. The question is whether or not it happens this year or next. If Goff is a franchise quarterback then the Rams could challenge for a .500 season and surprise a lot of people in 2017. They have the defense to win games and if McVay works wonders with the offense, Los Angeles should win at least six games and go over their win total of 5.5.
