One of the top contenders to win Super Bowl LII is the Green Bay Packers, led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Packers went 10-6 last season but they were blown out by Atlanta in the NFC Championship Game. The Packers have made the NFC title game in two of the last three seasons but lost each time. The Packers have a potent offense led by Rodgers, as Green Bay averaged 27 points per game last season, 4th-best in the NFL. The problem for the Packers is defense, as they were 21st in the NFL in points allowed. Green Bay upgraded the offense in the off-season with the addition of tight end Martellus Bennett but they did very little to help the defense.

Green Bay Packers Super Bowl Odds

NFC Championship Odds: +500

NFC North Odds: -260

Odds Packers Make Playoffs: -450

Packers Regular Season Win Total: 10.5

The Packers are one of the top choices to win the Super Bowl this season at odds of +1000. They are a big favorite to win the NFC North at -260 and oddsmakers think the Packers are going to win at least 10 games this season. The questions are whether or not the Packers can win 11 games and go over the total and if Green Bay can do enough to get back to the Super Bowl for the first time since winning it all following the 2010 season.

The Green Bay Packers Will Be a Success If…

Rodgers stays healthy. There is probably no player more important to their team in the NFL than Rodgers is to the Packers. Many people will think of Tom Brady for the Patriots but New England proved last year they have a quality backup quarterback. The Packers don’t have that luxury, as Brett Hundley is the backup to Rodgers.

When Rodgers plays well, the Packers win. When he struggles they lose. He had some bad moments early last season but he turned it on down the stretch and the Packers won their last six games and two playoff games. In the last seven games of the regular season he threw 18 TDs and had no interceptions.

The offense for Green Bay should be even better this season as the team added Bennett to give Rodgers another red zone threat and they got former All-Pro guard Jahri Evans. The team did lose T.J. Lang in free agency but overall, the offensive line looks solid.

The Green Bay Packers Will Be a Failure If…

The defense doesn’t play better. It is hard to win when your defense gives up 44 points but that is exactly what happened to the Packers in the NFC title game, as they were blown out by the Falcons, losing 44-21. When the Packers won Super Bowl XLV following the 2010 season they had a defense that ranked in the top five in the NFL.  It has been all downhill since.

The Packers couldn’t stop the pass last season and when you can’t stop the pass in the NFL you are in serious trouble. The Packers had inconsistent play at cornerback, as neither Damarious Randall nor Quinten Rollins were very good. The team lost Sam Shields and Micah Hyde in the off-season so they are hoping that the additions of Kevin Kang and Josh Jones will make up for the losses.

Green Bay Packers 2017 Predictions

The Packers have made the NFC title game in two of the last three years but that is not enough for people in Green Bay. The Packers want another Super Bowl title and they have the quarterback in Rodgers who can get them another one. The problem for Green Bay is a defense that simply isn’t that good. Green Bay made some minor changes in the off-season in hopes of upgrading the defense but it is still hard to get too excited about a Dom Capers defense.

The good news for the Packers is that they play a reasonable schedule, as it ranks as the 18th-most difficult in the NFL for the 2017 season. The offense should be good enough for Green Bay to outscore most of their opponents this season, which means an 11 or 12 win season is definitely possible. Unfortunately, the defense is still a major problem, so they will need Rodgers to stay healthy and produce big numbers if they are to make another Super Bowl run.
