The Dallas Cowboys are coming off their most successful season in a decade, as they went 13-3 in 2016, but in the end it meant little, as the team failed to win the NFC. The Super Bowl drought for “America’s Team” is now at 22 years and counting. The Cowboys have some young talented stars, including Ezekiel Elliot and Dak Prescott, but it is worth noting that Dallas lost 11 players in free agency and another two who retired. Improving upon last year’s 13-win season seems extremely unlikely for Dallas in 2017 and just getting to double-digit wins could be difficult.

Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Odds

Super Bowl Odds: +970

NFC Championship Odds: +480

NFC East Odds: +135

Odds Cowboys Make Playoffs: -185

Cowboys Regular Season Win Total: 9.5

Oddsmakers think the Cowboys are going to make the playoffs again in 2017 and that is actually saying something, as Dallas has not made the postseason in consecutive years since 2006-2007. The win total for Dallas for this season is 9.5, but the Cowboys may need to do more than win just 10 games to make the playoffs in the tough NFC.

The Dallas Cowboys Will Be a Success If…

Dak Prescott can duplicate what he did last season. Prescott was simply outstanding for Dallas in his rookie season, as he had perhaps the greatest rookie season for a quarterback in NFL history. He actually won Offensive Rookie of the Year over his teammate Ezekiel Elliott, who led the league in rushing as a rookie. Prescott made great decisions all season and was the key reason Dallas won 13 games.

Elliott had 322 carries last season and also caught 32 passes. He benefited from running behind the best offensive line in the NFL and he made the most of it. The Cowboys need Elliott to stay healthy, as his primary backup is the aging Darren McFadden.

The Dallas Cowboys Will Be a Failure If…

Elliott gets suspended or gets hurt.  Many people have forgotten all about the possible legal troubles for Elliott, as the NFL is still investigating him. Dallas can’t afford to lose Elliott, as he is their offensive star and he takes the pressure off of Prescott. Not many teams in the NFL rely as heavily on one player as the Cowboys do, so keeping Elliott on the field is critical to their success.

Dallas could also run into trouble this season if they don’t figure out their offensive line. What was once the best line in football no longer has Doug Free, who retired. The Cowboys still have left tackle Tyron Smith, right guard Zack Martin and center Travis Frederick but they need to replace Free. Dallas has moved La’el Collins to right tackle and they also have Chaz Green, Byron Bell and Jonathan Cooper. It may be Cooper who ends up at left guard.

Dallas Cowboys 2017 Predictions

You have probably heard about the too far, too fast slogan when it comes to sports teams. The Cowboys went from a 4-win team to a 13-win team in one season. They came too far, too fast and they are due for a fall. The team lost a lot in free agency and they did very little to replace the departed players.

Prescott showed a lot as a rookie and there is no doubting Elliott but will the offensive line be as good for Dallas in 2017?  Can Prescott duplicate what he did last season and can Elliott stay on the field?

The Cowboys do not have an easy schedule, as it ranks as the 10th-most difficult in the NFL for 2017.  The early part of the schedule is very difficult with games against the Giants, Broncos, Cardinals and Packers and the closing stretch is brutal, as they play three of their final four on the road with the only home game against the Seahawks.

It is almost a given the Cowboys won’t win as many games as they did a year ago and there is a decent chance they won’t even win 10 games, which would mean going under the win total of 9.5. Many people think the Cowboys are a given to make the playoffs but that may not be the case and you can get +150 on Dallas not making the playoffs in 2017. The Cowboys going 9-7 or 8-8 seems more likely than the team going 10-6 or 11-5 this season.
