What happened to the Carolina Panthers last season? The Panthers went from a 15-1 team that made the Super Bowl to a 6-10 flop that missed the playoffs. Oddsmakers expect the Panthers to rebound this season, as they set the win total for Carolina at nine games. The Panthers made some nice off-season moves, as they threw a ton of money at left tackle Matt Kalil and they signed defensive end Julius Peppers and cornerback Captain Munnerlyn. Carolina also took Christian McCaffrey in the NFL Draft and he should immediately upgrade an offense that took a major step backwards last season.

The Carolina Panthers Will Be a Success If…
Newton has a bounce back season. Newton didn’t play well in 2016 but he was not alone, as many players struggled. Newton has shown in his career that he is the perennial front runner. He is great when things are going well but he is awful when the team is struggling. Newton had a career-low completion percentage last season, as the Panthers won just six games. He will be coming off shoulder surgery, so he may need to be a little more selective in terms of running the ball.
The Panthers went from the top scoring offense in the NFL two years ago to 15th last season. Carolina lost six games by three points or less, so the lack of offense was a major problem. The Panthers brought in Kalil to protect Newton up front and they took Taylor Moton in the NFL Draft. Carolina also upgraded their offense with the additions of McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel. Both players should be able to stretch the field for Carolina this season.
The Carolina Panthers Will Be a Failure If…
The secondary isn’t any better. The Panthers made a major blunder two years ago when they let Josh Norman get away. That mistake, along with others, led to general manager Dave Gettleman being fired in the off-season.
Carolina has a decent front line and good linebackers led by Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis but the secondary is a concern. New defensive coordinator Steve Wilks will be counting heavily on Munnerlyn and Mike Adams helping his battered cornerbacks. The concern is that both Munnerlyn and Adams are past their prime. The Panthers got good play from James Bradberry last season but far too often he got little help. Carolina is hoping that Daryl Worley will improve in his second year and that the new additions will help Bradberry.
Carolina Panthers 2017 Predictions
The Panthers went thud last season, as they didn’t even finish .500 a year after making the Super Bowl. The key for Carolina will be getting effective play out of Newton. If he plays at an MVP level then Carolina could challenge in the NFC South this season.
The problem for Carolina is that Newton is no longer the invincible force he used to be. He is coming off shoulder surgery in the off-season and he is getting older. The addition of McCaffrey could be a good one but unless Newton makes better decisions it could be another disappointing season for the Panthers in 2017.
Carolina has an average schedule in 2017, as they play the 16th-most difficult schedule. The early part of the season should tell the story for Carolina, as they face winnable games against the 49ers, Bills, Saints and Lions in the first five weeks. Anything less than a 3-2 or 4-1 start could spell trouble for this year’s Panthers. A bounce back seems likely for Carolina but oddsmakers look to be right on the money with the win total of nine. A 9-7 season seems the most likely outcome for the 2017 Carolina Panthers.
